  • Hey rep, how easy/difficult are these to install if there is no existing wiring? I have a double story home and I am looking to put a few cameras around the house. Can I do it myself or would I need to get a professional to install it? Thanks

    • Hi There,
Thank you for your enquiry. Each of the above Network Video Systems have Cat 5 cabling. This type of cable is easier to install. However installing cables behind walls of a double story home can be slightly more difficult. Your local electrician can assist you with this type of install. Cat 5 cables should make it a quicker easier install.

      I hope this helps.

They're not too hard to install, as long as you're comfortable crawling around in the roof with the Redback Spiders. I installed 8 Cameras over a weekend, that includes mounting the cameras running all the CAT through the roof, and installing a patch panel for the wires to come out of. I had help, but you could do it by yourself if you wanted, expect it to be harder though.

Firstly I would recommend getting a bit of wood to make a template for where your camera holes are going to go in your walls/eaves, as each camera will require 3 holes for screws and a larger one for the wiring, so having something you can use to drill out the required pilots in 30 seconds is great.

The fixings that come with the Cameras are cheap and easily strippable so I'd recommend getting something better from Bunnings, especially if it's going to go outdoors. You’ll probably have to pull a few tiles off the roof as to get to the cameras when your mounting them, so be prepared to do that.

Running the wires through the roof will vary depending if you have insulation, and how your roofs set up. Though the hardest part is finding the right room and pushing the wires down through all the wall studs. You’ll definitely need a Yellow Poly Cable Feeder, I’d suggest getting 1 for each wire and if you have a mate or missus to help, pushing all of them down in a single sitting so you don’t have to constantly be moving around the roof.

You will probably also need to get a stud finder to make sure you’re not cutting holes in the wall where no wires can come out. But if you’re happy just dropping them through a hole in the ceiling, you could do that too.

I put up all my cameras, then attached a bundle of CAT to each and fed that through into the roof with the Cable Feeder. From there I dragged them all to the room I wanted them in, and finally pushed each wire down into the wall one at a time. It may make more sense to take the wire to the Camera, but at the time I felt taking to the room was easier.

Make sure you wrap the RJ45 Connectors so you don't snap off the locking tab when moving them through the roof/walls. The CAT Cables supplied are also pretty cheap and prone to getting crushed/crimping, so try not to make sharp bends with them as you'll end up breaking them.

Think all up it cost me about $100 extra to get everything I needed to install the cameras (On a Bunnings Powerpass Card). You could do it for less if you wanted to use the supplied screws.

  • Integrated solution with alarm system would be excellent home security.

  • Hey Rep, are the cameras powered via the Ethernet cable or do they have an independent 12V adapter?

    • "Operating Power DC12V" according to their product page.

    • Hello There,
      Thanks for your enquiry.
Each camera comes with 18m of cat 5 Ethernet cable.
      Hope this helps

        No it does not help.

Let me try asking in a different way:
What connections are on the back of the camera (none of your photos show that).
Does it have an RJ45 network port AND a power plug port, or is power supplied by the Network cable?

        • Yes this is a POE system.
          Cheers

not internet connected? Discounting stock to make way for internet connected because that's what people want now?

    • Hi There,
This unit is a Network Video Recorder that has a lan output that allows you to connect to your system remotely. Does this answer your question?
      Thanks

      • -3

actually no, it seems that I can view from the LAN, but not from a WAN/internet. Under network it says "peer to peer"… that's why I think it's ambiguous.

        • +1

The LAN access connects to your router which allows access to LAN/WAN internet. The peer to peer is a Swann server that sets up your NVR to your router by accessing your WiFi through your device. ie. phone or tablet
          Thanks

  • Is it possible to connect 2 extra cameras to this?

    • Picture only shows 4 'camera' network ports, but I also wonder if additional cameras can be connected via a network switch. I can't find any installation manuals for this product.

My guess is the product won't allow more than 4 cameras.

    • Hi,
      http://www.swann.com/au/sonvk-472854
This is a four channel system. It can only take up to four cameras. We have bigger NVR security units for sale is this interests you.

I've got a SWANN System at home, and whilst it's not the exact same systems being offered here, it's from the same range/line so I can give you a rough indication of its quality, ease of install, etc. This is going to be a long post, because there’s a fair bit to talk about. For 8 Cameras plus the NVR I paid roughly $1,000, 5 months ago.

Generally, the cameras are pretty good, they've got a solid build which is mostly metal, and seem reasonably well sealed. All the cameras I've installed have been outdoors, under the eaves. They get a little wet here in heavy rains, but so far we've had no problems. Your biggest area for failure is likely to be the water getting into the RJ45 Socket, or the Reset button. But if you attach these to the rafters so they're not just laying where water might collect in a leaky roof, you'll be fine. It is worth pointing out that the reset button is on the camera side, and nearly impossible to get to. This is common design 'feature' with most Security Cameras though. The cameras are susceptible to thunder, however. It always seems like loud claps of thunder make the image go blurry for a few hours, and have read similar reports on Amazon, and other places.

During the day time they can easily see 20 meters before the picture starts to look like you're squinting really hard to see the distance, and they provide ample quality to pick the make and model of a car at the end of a 20 meter driveway. Number plates aren't the most readably until you get in to about 10 meters. Night time the viewing distance drops dramatically, whilst you're able to see 30 meters no problem, it's really only usable at 10 meters unless you know the person you're looking at. The cameras also have a huge problem with IR interference, so if you install them too close to a wall, or pointing directly along a wall, you may notice the image quality drops due to the IR flooding one side of the lenses. This can cause the daytime image to go pink on occasion.

The footage provided by the cameras will be good enough to give to the police if someone breaks into your house, assuming you’ve had them installed in the right spots. You’re video/stills will probably look way better than half the images you see on Crime Stoppers.

The NVR is what most people should be concerned about, as that's where the bulk of your problems will occur. SWANN NVRs are good in a few ways. They keep cool, they're relatively ease to connect to the cameras and the internet, and they don't take up much space. HDD upgrading is pretty easy, from what I’ve seen. The 1TB HDD that came pre-installed with mine is enough to capture about 15 days worth of footage on motion detection, averaging about 6 hours of recording each day at 15FPS in 1080p. The motion detection is twitchy, so you’ll likely end up with a lot of shadow movement causing it to record, but it’s certainly better than always on recording for HDD space.

But in my experience, the software on the units is going to fail on you in one way or another. A week after installing my SWANN system the NVR decided it wants to freeze up after 36-48 hours. This basically means that you can view your cameras, but nothing is recorded. Rebooting the system via the software completely freezes the system, and only way to restart it by unplugging it for 5 minutes every day. The system also has a habit of ignoring LAN reservations, either set via a DHCP server or configured in the device. To make things worse, nearly once a month it’ll randomize its MAC address for no apparent reason. I still can’t figure out why. Sometimes the device will become unreachable via my iPhone/iPad/Windows Laptop, and a hour later will pop back up.

SWANN does offer a warranty period, but in my experience, they may as well not, and this is where SWANN products become a huge hassle. When my issues started I immediately reached out to their Customer Support via phone, and they directed me to their website support where I put in a ticket. 2 weeks later I got a response, asking me to schedule a time for a Firmware Update to resolve “all my problems”. When the tech finally called, I was told I needed to reschedule via the web dashboard as he was about to finish his shift. 4 months later, my support ticket is still open, and actively being ignored. Any new ticket I create gets merged into the old one or closed, and I’m sure the original support agent has left the company, as it’s no longer assigned to anyone. Really, the NVR doesn’t work, and if it wasn’t for a trusty 24 hour timer from Bunnings I’d have to unplug the system manually ever day. But as it is right now, it switches off for 15 minutes just so it can work for the other 23 hours and 45 minutes in a day and SWANN doesn't care to help fix it.

      TL;DR:
      Cameras are great at daytime.
      Cameras are good at nighttime.
      NVR is okay.
      NVR software is rubbish.
      Warranty is worthless.
      Support is non-existent.

      Would I recommend to a friend/OzBarginer? No.

      • Thanks. Much appreciated.

      • Did you manage to do the firmware update yourself?

        • Nope, I haven't managed to update my NVR as Swann haven't made the firmware publically available and refused to send me the update files and email instructions (because apparently it's far too hard for a simpleton like me to understand) to do it myself when I initially asked. They have released some NVR Model firmware on their Support Page, but it's only a fraction of their total range.

      • Thanks for such a detailed review.
What model NVR and cameras do you specifically have?
I'm still in two minds about purchasing. I have read on a lot of sites about Hikvision being a good brand but compared to this 4 camera system deal is pricier.

        • I'll put it to you this way, have you read on any sites that Swann is a good brand? I'm not going to lie, they do exist, but I find just as many complaints about them.

I'm obviously bias because I'm an ignored unhappy customer, but my recommendation is to avoid Swann and go with the Hikvision. It is my opinion, and the opinion of many people Reddit and Whirlpool, that Swann equipment is the bottom of the barrel.

You get what you pay for, and sometimes just because the price seems great, doesn't mean it's good value. I should have realized this before I opted to go Swann because it seemed like a good, reliable and cost effective option, and now I'm stuck putting in stopgap solutions when I should have a system that works without the need for manual intervention or 24 hour timers from Bunnings.

You'll probably pay a little more for a Hikvision, but long run it should serve you better. I certainly doubt the software on a Hikvision NVR isn't the same today as it was on models released in 2014.

I'd fully suggest doing your own research as well, don't be sucked in because of a sudden sale on a pricey, and possibly problematic system.

I also encourage Swann to prove me wrong. You could start by reaching out to me with the intention of resolving my issues. If nothing else it would certainly be amusing after the 4 months of silence I've been getting from your Warranty and Support Teams.
