How to sell for scrap

Have a 15 year old retired work vehicle now in my name. Transit diesel 312,000kms.
Won't start, NRMA is about to tow it to mechanics. Any number of problems could make it uneconomic to repair.
I have never had to sell a vehicle before that is a non-goer. Should I be looking to sell it for scrap value and how do I go about getting some remaining value out of this?
Thanks, Bill.

Post it on gumtree selling it as a non-running vehicle, they have to organise their own pickup.
Pros: Could get more money for it
Cons: Could possibly be waiting a long time for a buyer, hassle of them having to move it

Or call a wrecker and get them to give you $20 for it.
Pros: Quick and easy, gets it out of your hair
Cons: Next to no/no value out of it

    • I've used both of these methods.

For popular vehicles there's always a chance someone would buy the whole rusted thing just for parts (it happened to me). The additional price of towing it often makes it less lucrative to the potential buyer, though my buyer still though it was worth it.

I scrapped my second vehicle after ringing every place on the internet that picked up or called back. Since it was a 25 year old vehicle it probably had more metal than today's vehicles but when I scrapped it a couple of years ago scrap iron prices were at an all time low (probably still are?).

When dealing with scrappers pretend you're getting a quote from a plumber (in reverse). Most will try to pay you less than a $100 if you don't try. You can make hundreds more by shopping around and playing hardball. In my case I cancelled the vehicle registration before I scrapped it and made a pre-sale bonus. A lot of used car salesmen or scrappers will hope you forget about rego and CTP and pay you less than what you'd get from recovering those costs alone.

Have a google for specialist wreckers for that vehicle or even for a commercial vehicle wrecker.

About 4 years I had a old(1984) Toyota Hiace, same situation not worth spending any more money on(lots of rust, engine getting pretty old and rough) I called around a few places and ended up getting $450 for it, and they came from Melbourne to Ballarat to pick it up, I can't remember which wreckers it was now, but a google search should bring up a few.

      Good result.

  • ring up some of these places and get a quote https://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=car+removals+nsw ,should be over $200.00 going by what I've been paid in the past.

Gumtree. List for $600. Some low baller will offer you $300. Sold.

  • Thanks everyone. Will follow up.

    • How much did you get? Cartakebackaust.com seems to give high instant quotes for vans.
