Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 Black 32GB Rom 3GB RAM MTK Helio X20 US $149.99 (~AU $198.40) @ AliExpress

160

Had this in my cart and was about to buy at $164.99 two minutes later checked my cart and it was US$15 off.
Just mid-range specs but having just returned from Shanghai and compared this to the full range of Huawei I found the build of this nicer.
This is cheaper than it would have cost direct from xiaomi in China.
The black colour option usually sells for about a US$10-$15 premium over the cheapest colour gold and the new note 4X is the same phone but with a slightly weaker CPU
No B28
7% cashrewards will bring it down to ~AU$184.50

I wish the Xiaomi Note 3 Kate was on sale

If you register a Xaiomi account, it definitely backs up all of your phones content (contacts, SMS, etc) to its Chinese servers. There are various articles around about Xaiomi Redmis with preinstalled malware and data being backed up to China in the background. I have one and the hardware itself is good.

    • There was an issue where, if you had not yet set up an account, it would attempt to contact Xiaomi's servers to send data. It was technically a bug.
I don't use the Xiaomi account because I don't need it.
The proper global ROM is clean, but the Note 2's were renowned for coming with a dodgy ROM installed. Looks to be less of an issue with the newer models.

    • The first thing that you do when you receive your phone from one of these Chinese websites is to install the Global Stable ROM. That's what I do, takes 10 minutes if you know what you are doing. I keep my Xiaomi account logged in for my Xiaomi home cameras and MiFit band but I keep all the cloud syncing turned off.

    • I have a note 3. I also have a Xiaomi account, but only login to it from my laptop. Not sure how much protection that offers, but It MIGHT prevent them accessing all of my personal data. Then again, it might only open another portal for them.

Meh, I have zero privacy anyway. Got over it.

  • Aliexpress is a problem?
They like playing the game of kind of holding in custom or that kind of stories?

    • If you go with the more reputable stores the track record is better than sites like banggood or gearbest. Xiaomi Dreami Store in this deal is one of the most reputable for xaiomi phones on ali

      • Before a few people talking about items being held in custom for months. That is just a trick to get your money without sending you stocks. Reputations in this kind of Chinese website could be easily purchased by a few hundred dollars.

I have bought ~50 items from AliExpress, from a $280 phone, to a 50c gadget and everything in between.
Never had an issue with holding in customs. Most items arrive in 2-3 weeks (some took a full month).

One item I bought was significantly not as described, a poorly made fake backpack, I received a full refund from AliExpress.

    • Taking advantage of credit and interest by creating an opportunity for drop shippers to take a long time to be the middle men

  • I wonder how this would compare to my Nexus 5 which is on it's way out?

    • I have owned the Nexus 5 -> Nexus 6 and now own the Note4, I thinking it would feel very cheap but I am very happy with the quality, I say it is worth it. (also fingerprint unlock is awesome, I did not realize how much I would use it.)

the new note 4X is the same phone but with a slightly weaker CPU

The performance differential is very small. The Snapdragon CPU in the 4X will get far more custom ROM support and better battery life if that's your thing.

    • That's true I didn't consider the rom support or the smaller manufacturing process, I should have said slightly different

Note that this variant is a MTK Helio. The other variant (i.e. Snapdragon) should have much better support and performance.

    • +5

i think the mtk version has better performance (the chip is more powerful compared to the 625) but the snapdradon will give you better ROM support

yeh, im waiting for a redmi note 4X snapdragon in black at a decent price…

    • Get a note 4 global edition with snapdragon which supports more Aus 4G band.

    • If you have Indian friends then get one from there. It is around $260 (₹12999) for 64GB with 4 GB ram.

      • the indian one is worse in terms of band support. its specific to india. not a huge deal here, but its less useful if you go overseas.

    • this is pretty good for the black 4x if you do cashback

a friend of mine bought the Xiaomi redmi note 4 snapdragon version for $140 usd or about $184 AUD after the $14 discount applied last week. still available for the same price if you can get the $14 discount voucher.

    • gold version is usually cheaper because it's not that popular so not an amazing deal

Picked up a Note 3 Kate a month ago on ebay for $230 delivered from HK. Delivery took 3 days. So far i'm impressed with the phone. The only complaint is it is hard to get a decent case for it.

Ugh, when you're forced between one of those generic cases with a tiny piece of scotch tape adhesive or a huge sunglasses pouch. And then you start researching DIY plastic molding. Glad you found a case though, I was very surprised to find the model you mentioned had entire threads dedicated to finding accessories, makes me very appreciative of getting a nice looking one just from eBay.

    • How's the Note 3 Kate going for you a fortnight later? I'm thinking of picking one up :)
