Is The Travel Insurance with Citibank Signature Visa Good Enough

Hey guys,

I am going overseas soon and am tossing up if I use my insurance with Citi or buy a separate policy.

The citi insurance all looked good until I read this bit:

Extensive cover for unexpected medical and hospital expenses, except bed care patient allowance (i.e. miscellaneous expenses such as phone calls & TV rental) of A$110 > per day is limited to A$13,000 per person to maximum of A$16,500 in total. No cover for pre-existing medical conditions, unless prior approval given and the administrative fee paid.

If I am reading this right then I am only covered for $110 of medical expenses per day. I'm not going to the US but that seems really low.

Has anyone ever made a claim on the Allianz Global Insurance provided by citi?

Thanks

Thanks for the explanation but I still don't quite understand. Its a really confusing sentence.

I found this in another brochure: https://www.citibank.com.au/global_images/complimentaryinsur…

Unlimited except for reimbursement of incidental
expenses for bed care patients which is limited to
the cost of the expense up to $110 per day, with a
limit of $13,000 per person to a maximum $16,500
for a cardholder travelling with their spouse and/or
      dependent children.

Having read the two it sounds like the $110 per day is the miscellaneous expenses and the actual medical expenses covered is unlimited.

Yeah I think you are right, I'll remove my comment above as that reads differently for sure.

So it's saying unlimited cover, apart from incidental expenses which is capped at $110 per day and $13000 per person.

The initial sentence saying 'A$110 > per day' and writing 'extensive' cover instead of 'unlimited' was quite confusing.

Ive had this card and insurance since the gold card, now signature since 1998 and around 30 overseas trips all around the world made a claim back in 2012 and 2014.

2012 one was a disaster of a trip which involved a death in the family and a very sick 3 year old and they were really good, total claim was around $30k with cancelled flights/accommodation and new flights and medical.

2014 was 4 day hospital stay for really bad food poisoning and additional accommodation for not continuing the journey for others in the party (all flights for the party booked with the citibank card). total claim was around $4-5k

Both were through Zurich though, i was not aware citibank had changed to allianz and to be honest that makes me nervous as they are one of the dodgiest insurers in Oz, they routinely reject claims and only pay for the noisy customers.

  • I have a Bankwest card which has insurance via Allianz. Back in December we were due to fly out from Perth to Maldives with flight change in Singapore. Perth flight on Jetstar got delayed for 23 hours due to staffing problem and we missed out connecting Tiger flight.

Jetstar put us on the flight the next day but we had to buy new tickets from singapore to Maldives as it was our fault we missed the flight and to make it worse there was no space on the Tiger flight so we had to buy singapore airlines tickets. We missed one days accommodation and the cost of taxis to and back to home from perth airport due to the delay.

Allianz have said they will not cover this cost as per their PDS. I am out of pocket by $3000 and was hoping this sort of stuff would be covered by insurance like this but how wrong was I.

Travel insurance on credit card can be a bit hit and miss as i have found out the bad way.

    • What reason did they deny it? Was it because it was an airline issue vs a weather issue? or maybe too small a window between your connections?

      • Staffing issue with airline

        • So airline issues aren't covered? only weather events?

        • If it was a mechanical problem then it would have been covered.

  • in the same boat, normally just use the citi free one but since I am going to the US for 2 weeks I am looking at other options….for $100 with companies like Travel Insurance direct…the medical coverage is $5M
