Preventing Garden Lizards from Entering The House

We're having a problem with garden lizards entering our house through small gaps under the doors and windows.

We moved into this house a year ago, we noticed lizards coming in through under the flyscreens. There was a bit of a gap so we had the flyscreens replaced. It seemed to work for a little while, but now they're just finding other tiny gaps to get in.

I have tried my best to seal any gaps I find, but the lizards keep finding ways to get in. There are tiny gaps under doors, or between the door and the door frame on the sides that are almost impossible to seal off, it's become a losing battle and I am thoroughly frustrated. I have had to drive 3 lizards out just this morning.

Have any others had similar problems? I would love to know what people have done or are doing to keep garden lizards away from their house.

I know lizards are great for the garden, they keep insect numbers under control, but I'd love to know if there are any deterrents to stop them from coming in to the house.

Thank you

I think short of building another house for the lizards, you can't avoid it. Lizards are cold blooded animals, meaning they cannot regulate their body temperature, so they don't like places that are extremely hot or cold. If it is too hot/cold outside, it is their instinct to find refuge.

I think the only thing I can think of, is to try and keep your house clean by not leaving any food that attracts insects lying around. We do get the odd lizard or two in the house from time to time. But once they don't find any food, ie. no insects in the house, they will naturally leave when the weather gets better outside.

You may also want to consider paying for pest control every year. To remove the insects in your house, not the lizards. :)

    • Hi thanks for your reply. We're pretty good with keeping the house clean, there's never any food or anything else lying around so that can't be what's bringing the lizards in.

Also, we've had the pest control people in twice in the last 14 months, so there aren't any insects around for them to feed on either. I'm really confused about why they keep trying to come in.

A cat will control your lizard problem, but then you will have a cat problem.

That can be solved with a dog. Work your way up the chain until you reach an acceptable compromise.

no no no you need to send in wave after wave of Chinese needle snakes to eat the lizards, followed by snake-eating gorillas, and then when wintertime rolls around, the gorillas simply freeze to death.

That could work but I'm not sure if these are Bolivian lizards!

  • I wonder why they want in? I will find a lizard inside perhaps once every year or two, and it was the same growing up in Sydney.

    • Our front and back yards do have maybe twice as many lizards as I've seen in most gardens. I'm not sure why that is either.

        Paging a herpetologist!

        • Giving the lizards herpes will help?

How does one give a lizard herpes?

        • @airzone: you'd have to ask the herpetologist.

        • @airzone:

          Tenderly.

Lizards are great indoors though. They keep the flies and spiders at bay.

    Google gave me this: http://www.homeremediescare.com/16-easy-and-efficient-home-r…

I'd say start with the ones that would are less intrusive and weird… then work your way up to "cat".

    • Thank you for your suggestions. I saw this a while ago when I first looked it up. I had tried the moth balls initially, but it didn't seem to bother the lizards at all so I gave up on the rest. But I'll give the others a try this weekend.

    Remove the lounge.

We get a lot of them inside. There are lots in the garage and shed too. I'm not concerned or trying to get rid of them, our kids like finding them!

  • Change the locks?

  • If you live in Brisbane, this is just normal - little lizards - geckos live inside your house. Just learn to live with them. They are normal.

  • Bikies, Cats or Eneloops.

    Pick Two.

    Get a cat.

Lizards are considered good luck. But I find only people with lizard problems say this.

    • Yeah, my grandma used to say that about bird droppings landing on her head!

  • We have lots of skinks and geckos around our house. Two cats keep the house lizard free, they love catching them.

  • Have you tried Garden Gnomes?

  • Maybe OP is worried abouy this:

Not the first time ive heard of these risks….

  • Thank you very much to everyone who posted with their suggestions.

My pregnant wife is extremely sensitive to smells at the moment and has actually barred me from using the 2 bottles of CK One that I got from Chemist Warehouse because the fragrance makes her sick. So I'm not sure if the onion/garlic sprays or the crushed egg shells will be permitted. But I'll try the crushed pepper spray out and hope that the 2 feral cats I see in the area will do the rest! The eneloops will have to remain in the batteries drawer unfortunately.

    Thanks again.
