Pajero or Prado?

I'm trying to decide which vehicle to purchase between a Prado VX, GLX and NT Pajero Exceed around 2008 or 2009 upward for Pajero. My budget is around $20k.

The primary use of the vehicle will be as a family car during the week and 4wding weekends and holidays.

They both seem like well suited vehicles for what I'm after. The Pajero seems to have a bit more bang for buck, but the Prado maybe more resale value.

If there's anyone out there that has experience with either or both these cars, I'd love your input.

Thanks

Prado for reliability and resale but diesel only

    • I've heard that the diesel Prado is really sluggish, especially compared to the Pajero?

Do you want to go faster to a worse resale and more expensive repairs, or get there a bit slower…?

        • Well I just wanted something to happen when I hit the accelerator, but when you put it like that, I guess I'd prefer to go a little slower lol

        • @subywagon:

Prado is still fine. But at the end of the day for an ~8yo car it all depends on how it's been treated

  • Both have bullet proof diesels.
pajero has not changed their shape for almost 10 years and not likely to do so for at least another 5. you can pick them up for cheap as chips.
08 prado is the 120series, pretty aged too but under $20k end of 09 was the 150 series which is the current shape and a gx will set you back about $25k

except the Pajero as it was is now gone. From what they say on the 4wd forums the Pajero is a very underrated vehicle, and well worth considering against a Prado - especially given the 'toyota tax'. You'll get a newer, less kms version of a Pajero than a Prado for the same $.

When we looked at a Prado, the interior seemed quite compact and the rear seat didn't fold flat into the floor like others. Our Pathfinder rear row gets used quite regularly, so having a Prado with the side fold seats would have compromised rear boot space too much and removing them means they aren't available all the time. I sold a bike to a bloke with a Prado and he looked to struggle to fit it in the back with the rear seats fitted (folded)

iv'e never paid 20 grand for chips… let alone a sunday drive. get a ford…

  • We have a petrol Prado that is a little older than you are looking at. We bought it second hand and it is a great car. We take it to Fraser Island fairly regularly and it is great off-road.

At the time my partner was steering clear of a particular model of diesel Prado as there were lots of stories about something very expensive going wrong if something specific didn't happen during servicing. I can't remember what it was, or the particular model, though it could be worth looking into.

prado diesel auto has an insane resale value, they get around 35-38K at pickles, 4 years old with 100-120K KM

Yep Prado and LC200 are 2 cars you could own for 200,000km and get about 50% resale after that time!

      Just crazy

      • all farmers, they will buy them used and drive them into the ground, literally.
channel 9 in sydney still uses a 1998 land crusier for their some of their live broadcasts because the car is super reliable and has a hole cut into the roof so its $0 resale anyway

I think that antenna boom is worth more than the car lol

If you go for the Pajero, just be prepared for Spanish speakers to tell you the meaning of the word…

  • At that age I think it's pretty pointless looking at resale value another 5 years down the track. Both will be sub 10k.
I've owned both Pajero & Prado, although older than these. Both are good vehicles if looked after. Look for service history and wear and tear, both inside & under the vehicle. I wouldn't pay over the odds for top of the range models either. Next model down offers plenty of goodies and less to go wrong.

  • Pajero. I owned an Exceed. No issues in my 4 yrs of owning the car. I still miss it.
