Pro rated phone bill

Last month I changed over from Jenee mobile to a Kogan plan.
Today I received my last bill from Jenee mobile which is totalling $225.
My Jeenee plan was initially the $25 plan with 2GB data and $500 of calls, which i had connected to back in 2014.
Before I disconnected from Jeenee, I had used about 1.9GB of the monthly 2GB total.
However they prorated my bill and the cap consequently became 1.2GB and $300 of calls.
This led to $200+ in excess usage charges.

I called up Jeenee and the lady on the phone says that since I did not give 30 days notice, they prorated my bill. She couldnt show me where it says that my bill would be prorated but she said that they didnt need to write it anywhere since I hadn't given notice. She said my apparent 700mb excess was charged at 25c/mb totalling $170, which is the 2014 rate as opposed to the 4c/mb currently on all Jeenee plans since I signed up in 2014.
She spoke to her team leader and said that she would put the 700mb excess as $10 for 1gb add on, bringing the bill down substatially however I would still have to pay the excess call charges.

This seems so ridiculous to me especially since I believed I was well within the cap and did not want my bill to be prorated. Is there anything else I can do?

I agree. Also, to quote Jenee Mobile's website:

All our plans are month to month unless otherwise stated, and must be paid in advance by direct debit only.

Therefore, you would have PAID IN ADVANCE for the entire month, so there is nothing for them to pro-rate.

If you are required to give 30 days notice, they should only be charging you for an additional month regardless

    • Also is "you are required to give 30 days notice" specified anywhere? If not your case is very much stronger IMHO.

  • Had a similar issue leaving Telechoice, they also charged me a plan break fee on my out of contract, month to month service.
At least a call to them sorted it out though.

This is definitely illegal behavior on their part, at worst you can offer to pay for the month, and when they say pro rata, that is from the monthly cost, not the data usage or calls made. That is part and parcel of the plan, they cant just go ahead and decide to charge you the actual rate when they feel like it.

  • The big telcos only pro rata the monthly fee, however Exetel, and likely other resellers, do pro rata the fee and allowances (which is mentioned in their T&Cs). Found this the hard way and paid the $10/GB excess data charge because it resulted in me going over by 200MB when I though I had a few GB remaining.

  • I got the 50GB 4G and they took 10 days to send the SIM but once activated the first months billing period equated to (1 month - Shipping Time) … So I raised a support ticket asking why this was the case. 1 week later I sent another support ticket stating the same but not worded as nice and 5 days later got an SMS saying they have credited my account for $11. I'm still WTF^_^BBQ. On the plus side the data is good.
