Croatia for 4 Weeks - Itinerary Ideas?

I am planning a holiday to Europe for 2 months.

Wanting to spend 3/4 weeks in Croatia as this is my dads home country and I want to emerge myself in my dads culture.

I will be spending 1 week in his home town (Kali) I also want to visit the typical tourist area like Split, Zadar and Dubrovnik but also want to explore around the areas that aint tourist traps.

Any advice and knowledge on what to see and where to go from anyone would be great appreciated! I'm still trying to figure out my itinerary so I'm open to any ideas people put forward.

Thanks in advance ! :)

  • The time of year you are there will determine how touristy it is. Croats I chatted with said the tourist population is many times the locals in summer, and in winter, the locals in the hospitality industry take their holidays. If you don't like too crowded try shoulder season. Go to the islands. The water is amazing down south, not so much up north.

  • Jump across to the island of Hvar. Very nice. Check out Disco Club Max (one of the best night clubs on the island- you need a tax to get there)

  • You will probably be landing in Zagreb, Croatian capital. It is worth spending few days there to explore city, plenty of things to see and enjoy. Food is great as well. From Zagreb on your way to Kali stop for a day or two at Plitvice Lake. Absolutely a must to see. Plenty of hotels or private (cheap)accommodation. From Plitvice head to Zadar, beautiful city and surrounding places. Kali is just a short sail from Zadar. While in Kali you can explore Kornati, a group of islands in Adriatic sea. After Kali visit Dubrovnik but it is extremely touristy and crowded, Split and maybe nearby islands, Sibenik. All of these places will be busy and full of tourists but it is nice to see. Inland you can explore river Krka National Park, it is a short drive from Zadar. Not far away from Zadar is island Pag with its famous Zrce where party goes all summer.
