Cheap but Good Funeral Director in Melbourne

I'm Looking to prepay a funeral for my husband and myself. Any recommendations for a "no ripoff" funeral director in Melbourne.

Have you considered funeral insurance instead of prepaying a lump sum?

There's going to be factors like age, cover amount and premiums to think about and the insurance won't necessarily suit everyone's circumstances, but it's something that might be worth looking at.

    • have you had experience on purchasing funeral insurance? I have the impression they are a bit of 'rip off' - pricey and small payout. prey on emotion for people to buy.

      • I personally haven't had any experience with funeral experience.

However, as with any insurance, a buyer should always consider the product based on their own circumstances to work out whether it's suitable for themselves.

prey on emotion for people to buy.

This wouldn't be much different to someone trying to sell you life insurance. There are ways to get these policies online without even having to talk to anyone.

I'm merely putting the suggestion out there to OP as an alternative since he/she is requesting a "cheap" funeral director. There's also risks in pre-paying - what if they go bust before death?

  • depends on what you are looking for.

are you going for cremation or burial?
service or no service? (you can organise your own memorial service else where- unless it is you that is dead then someone else will have to organise it).

I had to organise a funeral a couple of years ago

found a locally licensed independent funeral director who organised the cremation - there was no public viewing or anything.

the memorial service was held at a local church (even though the person was not religious). - the church did some of the catering (sandwiches, tea & coffee, etc and friends brought things as well.

the funeral director was (from memory) ~ $1300.

  • Maybe invest in a really good barbecue?

  • Consider funeral bonds. These are pre paid and earn a small bonus each year. If you're on a Centrelink pension they are not counted as an asset. You or relatives can then choose the funeral director when needed.
