Laptop Extended Warranty. To Buy or Not to Buy?

Hey guys,

Just want to get a general consensus if people actually buy extended warranties for their laptops? I'm currently eyeing a Dell XPS 15 kabylake laptop and am wondering if I should pony up and buy 3 years cover? Is it worth it?

What are your experiences like if your laptop dies after the first year warranty? Do they charge a premium to get everything fixed?

Love to hear people's thoughts and views. Thank you.

Nope. Consumer law covers it anyway.
Unless it's on-site warranty which I'd pay more to extend

    • Oh please explain? Cause to my knowledge, when my first year warranty finishes, Dell will have to charge me for any repairs. Isn't that why people pay more for extra years of warranty? What does consumer law in this instance cover? Cheers

Australian Consumer Law means you are covered by the manufacturer for a reasonable period of time, relative to the expected life and cost of the product. A reasonable person would expect a laptop to last at least 2-3 years, especially a premium XPS for $2000+, and even though they state only 12 months warranty, Dell can't avoid the law.
In practice, you usually have to argue/put up a fight after the first year to get a warranty claim done, but I've never had one turned down after mentioning ACL

This is why extended warranties are typically a scam here.

Of course, this only relates to defects and faults, so any kind of accidental damage or wear and tear is not covered.

  • bought extended warranty before for TV and appliances. Have had once used the extended warranty (basically you are buying insurance from third party company).

One big lesson I learn is to keep a photocopy of the origami all receipt right away or ask for a printed invoice. Don't just take the receipt printed on thermo paper. The writing on the receipt often vanishes or disappears after a short time and you have no evidence to make your claim even you purchase the extended warranty.

  • Laptops purchased for work / in business' name — always 3-years NBD on-site warranty. Yes consumers are covered by statutory warranty, but with company computers I just want the them fixed as soon as possible.

Home / personal computers on the other hand, I don't think extended warranty is worth it.
