Optus Prepaid SIM (Start Kit) Must Be Activated within 30 Days of Purchase

I recently noticed that Optus Start Kit SIM card sold in Coles and Woolworhts all have this label stuck on the package. And there is also a expiry date at the back of the package, e.g. 01 Nov 2018.

SIM contains no value until loaded on purchase, Activate within 30 days of purchase or by the date advertised on a promotion

I usually purchase a few Start kits when they are half priced. I don't want to activate them any time soon. Now my questions are:

  • What do I do at the store? Do I simply take the SIM with me or ask a cashier to do something with the SIM (load value)?
  • What is the actual expiry date of the SIM? Is it 30 days after the cashier load the value or the expiry date printed on the back.

Comments

  • It doesn't have to be activated within 30 days. Still using some I bought from Coles last year.

    • the ones last year didn't have the sticker. the new ones apparently have the credit expired within 30days or purchase but the sim can be activated before the expiry date with no credit

    • I did online chat with Optus 1 hour ago and the person said "I'm sorry but the $30 credit won't apply because the credit will expire after 30 days."

  • I spoke to Optus Chat and they said the the expiry date on the pack is for the SIM card. To receive the $30 credit, it must be activated within 30 days. It seems that after 30 days the SIM can be activated right up until the expiry date on the pack which is usually 1-2 years away. However there will be $0 credit tho.

    • Interesting, I thought they would do it by killing the SIM ID but this way is simpler, they just expire the included credit.
