[Deal Cancelled] Bauhn PowerCube Power Board $7.99 @ ALDI 25/3

Moved to Forum: Original Link

UPDATE: Aldi has stated that it won't be available for sale on Saturday. No idea what happened. Maybe they couldn't secure enough stock? Hopefully they bring it back soon. :(

Please note that the Power Cube, previously advertised for sale with these Assorted TV & Phone Accessories, will not be available for sale.

Cheapest price I've seen for a PowerCube. Previous cheapest price was $10 back during the DSE days.

It's a compact version of a power board. Great for travelling too, and you can plug 5 adaptors in without blocking any sockets.

It is a genuine allocacoc PowerCube - if you zoom in to this photo you'll see the powercube branding.

It doesn't look like the version with the built-in USB charger. The charging circuitry in that version is very basic anyway, it only identifies itself as an Apple charger and only provides 2.1A across the two ports. Plugging in a smart QC multi-port charger like this 5-port one would be a better use of the socket it takes up. You can add a duck head adaptor to make it neat.

Available from this Saturday 25th of March.

$7.99 each: Power Cube, 1m USB Lightning Cable, 2m HDMI Cable. Also available in 2m USB to Micro USB Cable, 5m TV Antenna Cable with 2 adaptors, 1.2m Retractable AUX Cable, Single USB Power Adaptor, 2.1A USB Car Charger, In Ear Earphones or 5m Extension Lead.

It's actually a genuine one. If you zoom in on this photo, you'll see the PowerCube branding. Aldi just rebranded it like they normally do.

      • Thanks, that's good, sick of usb chargers taking up the space next to them on conventional strips! This should solve that problem! Do the sockets revolve, or are they fixed do you know?

        • +1

They're fixed. I think designing a reliable revolving one would be a challenge. :)

        • @eug: True, I'd settle for one that doesn't arc when you press the switch or plug something in to a powered up board like my hpm or arlec ones!! thanks Eug.

  • +2

Apart from the shape, (assuming that appeals to you,) does this cube have any advantages over a cheap 6-way strip like this $6 HPM or $4 Arlec ?

    • +1

You can plug 5 adaptors in without blocking any sockets, and it's more compact to travel with than a full-sized power board.

  • So many +1's. There's no chance I'm getting this, is there?

  • Can this only be used as a way of expanding more power ports from one power port?

    • +1

Yup, it's a power board in cube form.

  • When you click onto the page there is no mention of the powercube in the description or the photos. Have they removed it?

    • Its still shown on page 17 of the catalogue

      • +1

Catalogue would've been printed so no going back on that. Looks as if Aldi has been caught up in a copyright infringement with allocacoc and have removed it from sale… will still be heading down Saturday morning to snag a couple if on sale, hope they don't waste my time!

        • +1

Threats of court injunctions cause this, although not for copyright infringement, from what I heard. As far as I know, there is no-one holding the rights to the use of the "powercube" mark for consumer power-boards here in Australia.

They will not sell these as a result.

    • Strange, it's still in the catalog on Lasoo.

Let's see what happens on Sat!

  • I checked it on their site as well- and they removed it and replaced the photo altogether.
To save time- suggest people check the 'apology' notice in the paper first.

    • That's a disappointment. I wonder what happened. Oh well, hope it comes back one day.

The Powercube is most definitely FOR SALE at Aldi! I just bought two at Macquarie Centre. There were up to 10 in total.

  • There were zero power cubes at ALDI Edgecliff at 9am this morning and I wasn't the only one looking for them. Didn't ask why as didn't have time. They were named on the display but no stock.
EDIT: Doesn't mean there weren't any earlier and just sold out, not sure.

    • Past experience dictates you have to go at opening time to grab bargains. A lot can happen in 30min…

Plenties at Aldi Tuggeranong ACT. They are on the cardboard shelves in the alcohol section.

They cashier lady told me someone was after it earlier and they couldnt find it lol.

    • Nope, all gone now

  • I went to North Rocks Aldi and was told they were pulled of the shelves due to quality issues… Might be a recall for those who managed to get their hands on them?

  • +1

Staff said they were recalled for safety reasons.

  • Lol lame. Just walked up and down Aldi

    • Brandon Park Aldi

  • Must be a supply issue then, one of the stores i check (Burwood VIC) had an appology notice saying there was none for sale. 2 other stores same thing.

  • Got 2 from Aldi Parramatta. Still around 7 left.
The manager say nothing about quality issues when paid for the items. Probably just supply issue or else all should have been pulled out from the shelves from all stores.

  • Omfg i woke up early today and it was all gone! I was thinking damn brodens..

  • A staff member in Canterbury said they have been withdrawn. Some wording was misleading or something.

  • Just went to Burwood Aldi, staff said there was a recall

Maybe recall because of pricing error?
I have opened mine and it is using genuine allocacoc user manual instead of bauhn, showing the 3 different models (original, extended and extended usb).
The unit itself has genuine allocacoc label engraved with bauhn label printed on top of it. Been using mine and working fine so far.

    • On the plug end, are the prongs full metal or 50% ?

      • Active & Neutral 50%, Earth full metal.

        • Thanks.

    • Been using mine the whole day (under watchful eyes) and I think it
was recalled because of the error is in the user manual. I have bought
Bauhn and it has its own manual plus a warranty leaflet with an Aust
telephone number. This one does not have that.
The unit is just five power points, with approx 1.5m cable. Looks
like a packing list mistake at the factory.
This is the unit being sold but with Bauhn label.

None in Coomera. Staff say didn't come in - possibly didnt meet Aus standards.

    • A few people above reported it being available in their store, and the PowerCube has been sold here for years, so it's more likely a supply issue. Hopefully it'll come back in the future!

  • Nothing at newcomb aldi…..apology ticket next the sale items.

  • Did not find any. Was informed this morning powercube was recalled.

  • I work at Aldi, the powercubes did get sent to every store as they were part of the same box as all the other accessories but they should of been taken off the floor as they were recalled.

      should have

  • I woke up hungover at 8am on Saturday for nothing…I should have kept up to date with this post

  • I bought a couple from my local ALDI yesterday morning. Were they really supposed to have been withdrawn from sale because of a safety recall?

Did they do safety testing at the 11th hour? I am hesistant to use mine now.

    • +1

It has been sold here for years so I doubt it's safety-related.

  • Safety recall
    Use at your own risk

    • No, not a safety issue - a legal threat issue. Can't say more for legal reasons.

The only ones with safety issues were already recalled a few months ago, and these were only sold with with detachable leads and fuses in them via BigW/Target/Kmart.

      • Based on what evidence?

        • +1

shawncro 222 may I ask what evidence you have of them being recalled for safety reasons?

        • +1

Safety-related recalled products are listed at a government site - only the Rewireable Powercube that was imported by one specific disty and only sold through the outlets above, appears on the list there in December:

          https://www.productsafety.gov.au/site-search/powercube

That disty has had a few other recalls, as has Aldi: https://www.productsafety.gov.au/site-search/funtastic

The other cubes imported by Aldi and other disties are not listed and not affected by any safety-related issues, as they have been tested/approved and sold here for some years, and unlike the recalled units, do not have fuses or detachable leads.

        • @Auspcmarket:

          detachable leads.

Huh, you would think they would have learnt by now.

          https://audiocube.funtastic.com.au/

      • No, not a safety issue - a legal threat issue. Can't say more for legal reasons.

        are you being recalled too?

        • +1

haha, no, I'm just an observer who has industry contacts.

Unfortunately, the regulatory system for safety, coupled with the high cost of testing and the opaque administration bureaucracy here, does not punish offenders sufficiently enough to encourage thorough evaluation of new products for importation here. The volume of recalls suggests a tendency to sell first of all, and deal with fallout later. They should have an escalating system of fines, such that first time offenders are warned, and repeat offenders are progressively punished with higher and higher fines until they get the message that compliance testing is a necessary part of doing business.

      • Maybe they weren't allowed to use the "PowerCube" branding along with "Bauhn"?

        • No - there's no trademark registered for "powercube" here that could be used as a basis for starting infringement proceedings.

  • This is not a product/safety recall as per their official Facebook page.
Good on ya for those who got hold of these.

  • Well great , whats the alternative ?
