Qantas FF Points

Hi,

Im looking to upgrade a flight from economy to business. 1) how easy is it to do with ff points and 2) whats the best way to get them? Do people sell them?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Only certain economy fare buckets can be upgraded with points, so you need to ensure that you purchase the right economy ticket.

Also, the upgrade is not guaranteed. Depending on your status with Qantas, you go into a queue - Platinum One first, then Platinum, then Gold, then Silver and finally Bronze. If anyone with higher status has put in for an upgrade, they will get it before you would. (ie if there are any seats available for upgrades).

In terms of buying points, yes, you can buy them on Gumtree or even here in the classifieds section (not legal as per the terms and conditions of QFF, but many people do it). You can also get them as special signing on offers for various credit cards. If you only need a couple more points to make up the requirement, you can buy them off Qantas.

No mate. You can legit upgrade an economy fare to a business fare using points. It's not a standby/if available situation.

      • I beg to differ. Have a read of https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/flying/using-points-qantas… where it says that you "request" an upgrade and confirmation will not be provided till 24 hours before the flight.

The page also says, "Classic Upgrade Reward registrations are prioritised according to your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership level: Platinum first, followed by Gold, Silver and then Bronze."

and it also lists out which fare classes are not eligible for upgrades.

If you are successful, the points will be deducted. If you are not, your points remain where they are.

where it says that you "request" an upgrade and confirmation will not be provided till 24 hours before the flight.

Can't see that anywhere. Sure you didn't misinterpret the rules? I see Request Upgrade but surely they need a seat available to upgrade you to in the first place …

"Classic Upgrade Reward registrations are prioritised according to your Qantas Frequent Flyer membership level: Platinum first, followed by Gold, Silver and then Bronze."

Which would mean, by my understanding, if a bronze and gold request an upgrade and there is 1 available seat the gold gets it.

Also never experienced any issues and have done this domestically and internationally many times.

      • It can be a standby situation but I don't believe it always is a standby situation. From memory of reading the Point Hacks article, how "instant" it is is somewhat dependent on whether you're looking at an International upgrade or a Domestic upgrade.

Using what you described below, if a Platinum, Gold, or Bronze all requested an upgrade and there was only one seat remaining, the Platinum would logically get it right?

If you use your logic, it would always go to whoever requested it first.

Perhaps the booking systems aren't linked meaning someone processes them or they get done in batch as opposed to real-time. Not sure as I don't work for them. I do know I've never had an issue though.

Done this a few times. Was Platinum back in the day but stopped flying so much and now have to make do with Silver for life.

    Check this out.

Anyone know if you can buy status credits on Gumtree, OzB etc? Need a few more to advance.

    • Don't think status credits can be transferred at all, so no.

A couple of credit cards now give you status credits though..! ANZ Frequent Flyer Black is one of them (and I think there's another one).

There might also be family pooling of status credits, but I'm not sure if that's a Qantas or a Virgin Velocity thing.

      • Yeah I get 1 status point for each $100 I spend at Coles with Flybuys, but so far have only got 14 points since it started in Oct??/Nov?? 16. Lol

        • That's Virgin Australia Velocity status points though. Not Qantas.
