eBay Seller Gave Wrong Return Address. eBay Money Guarantee Still Applies?

Hi Ozb,
Recently had a case on eBay where the return address for an item was not the correct one (old address given). The buyer has already shipped the item and have been told the same by Postal office.

Will eBay give me the seller back the money?

the buyer returned the item to the return address provided.

Why would you, the seller, get the money for your own error and the buyer not end up with the item AND be out of pocket??

    • My friends new to eBay and she already refunded the buyer as she did not know to wait until item was returned. She had accidentally given an old shipping address

        the horse has bolted.

        shut it down.

        • As in bad luck …?

          @jnathanc:
at this stage there is nothing that ebay or paypal can do

          I see 2 options.

          (1) your friend (and please just give the complete story from the start) can send an express post envelope to the old address and outline the situation/wrong address and ask if the new residents can redirect the parcel - i.e. write on it "no longer at this address try - <insert new address>"

          (2) the parcel/item gets returned to the buyer as the new residents at the old address say your friend doesn't live there any more. your friend email/messages the buyer about the incorrect address. the buyer then sends the item to the correct address (your friend will have to cough the postage for their error here).

both these options rely on the cooperation of strangers to do the right thing (and being able to do the right thing) - e.g. what if no one lives at the old address any more?

  • Won't the tenants of the old address presumably reject the package and get it sent back to the buyer?

How much is the item worth, anyway?

    • Not neccesarily, I've had something sent to an old address and AP couldn't even explain to me why it was signed by someone not me

they can't disclose this information to you because you're neither the sender nor the addressee.

        • I don't really care about the identity of the person signing it, pay attention to the comment i was replying to

        • @Tal_Shiar:
Was the article shipped with registered post with the person-to-person?

      • Australia Post couriers are not going to ask for the people's ID's when they answer the door at the address. It is completely up to the person answering the door to be honest.

    • Won't the tenants of the old address presumably reject the package and get it sent back to the buyer?

      only if they're honest.

    • The item was 1k

  • All the buyer needs to do is prove they sent the item back with registered post to the address that was provided to them, anything from that point on is your problem as the seller.

  • Will eBay give me the seller back the money?

the mbg and pp buyer protection is to cover the buyer. pp seller protection is to cover seller.

  • Ebay isn't in the habit of paying out money to sellers for no particular reason. If the seller gave the customer the wrong address it really is just their problem alone.
