Buying over the Internet (Import duties)

Hi ozbargainers,

I have a question about buying a grey import product. I want to buy a phone which cost around 700$. I know that I don't have to pay for tax or duty because the item cost lower than 1000$. However I would like to buy 3, which will cost me more than 2k, do I have to pay for the tax for it?

PS. I'm buying iphone from Vaya

lol just buy one at a time

  • Import them separately.

  • If you order it in one transaction then yes you will have to pay tax on the importation.

    • so will it solve the problem if I buy it one by one?

      • Yes. Three seperate orders.

Wow it's really cool that both you, your mother and your sister want the same phone at the same time. How about that :)

    • No, I'm going back to my country soon, and my friends asking me to get one since its cheap

      • Why not directly order it to their country? You could possibly get done for importation to that country too if you take 3 brand new phones in your suitcase across

        • That is probably a risk that OP is willing to take. A lot of people actually do it with phones and branded products (e.g. bags, shoes, etc). There is an element of risk, but most of the time ppl get away with it.

Unfortunately, in some countries, you would need to pay quite a bit (both officially and unofficially-bribe) whenever you receive something via post.
Some custom officials may not even let you have mobile phone by using some excuse (e.g. phone has to be certified by the national body etc) unless you give them money.
