Using Another Family Member's Staff Card

Hey all,

Just a heads up if you plan on using a woolies staff card (that doesn't have your name on it), you may have your card confiscated because it just happened to me.

They told me that my mum (because her name is on the card) would have to come in to pick it up. This was at the Sydney Town Hall branch.

It's pretty ridiculous customer service, because now my mum has to travel all the way to the city from Campbelltown to pick up her card.
It is pretty annoying that they do this, they could have handled it differently by recording the name and number on the card and contacted my mum not to let other people use it.
Since they check it anyway, then theoretically it shouldn't matter if I kept it since it would just be declined if I tried to use it.
But having said that, I get that they were just doing their job.

Anyways, just thought I'd post it here in case anyone plans to do this.

Just did some googling and found this:
http://www.woolworthsgroup.com.au/icms_docs/183764_Code_of_C…

I'm guessing it was recently communicated to the staff, because they've never checked prior to this.

  • Is she even allowed to share her staff card?

    • +3

Probably not, but I didn't expect them to confiscate it.
Anyway the point of this post is not to complain about not being able to use it. I just wanted to warn others who may be doing this, surely I'm not the only one…

Reason for confiscating could be because wanting to prevent identity fraud. I personally think its fair for the rightful owner to pick it up instead of someone else claiming to be family member.

  • No they aren't.

  • Wonder what made them confiscate it. Perhaps it was a manager on the till and they saw that it was a females name on the card instead of a males (if you are a male OP?).

I know when i was at colesmyer i was able to order another card for a family member to use, but i beleive i was supposed to be there if i used mine

    • The guy at the till asked for my ID and I told him that it's my mum's card, so he gave it to the manager and told me that she would have to come in to pick it up.

Yea I would ask to get a card in my name but unfortunately, woolies only give out two cards per Staff member AFAIK.

  • Thanks for the warning

Your Mum breached the terms and conditions of the card, she could risk losing it totally.

Has always been like this but you also risk possible termination (extremely unlikely) by giving out your staff card. Should be grateful that they are allowing it to be picked up again. The best way is to just use self serve or go to a register that has someone young. I used to regularly be asked for ID by the older ladies on register most likely because I am young but now only ever use self serve.

    • +1

Yeah termination is extremely unlikely, but i have seen a number of people have their cards cancelled because of misuse and are then unable to apply for a new one. All in the T&C

  • I thought this was always the case and common knowledge. Some employees check with more scrutiny than others. I found that the more experienced staff at big w were especially vigilant. I'm surprised that the card doesn't require photo identification. 5% discount sounds small but it makes a huge difference to the family budget and if used fraudulently (as in stolen, duplicated etc) the loses could be significant. disclaimer: previously have had a relative work at Woolworths and my partner had the second card.

you could have stolen it, found it etc..
confiscating it was the correct thing to do.

    • You sound so definitive. Not saying it did, but what if the surname was the same. Given mother and son

  • She should know that its against the terms and conditions of the card to share it, it even says as a condition on the back of the card that it can only be used by the person whose name is on the card, and if presented by someone else it can be confiscated.

If she is a part time or full time employee she can apply to have a second card in your name.

  • Completely fair. Seems obvious to me.

    1. Staff shouldn't share their card , family member or not.

    2. This is also to stop people from finding a lost card and using it to buy discounted items…

Your mum might get a warning from management for sharing her card.

    • I think staff should share their card with family members. Coles give staff a second card for this reason. I think Woolworths is going against it's staff here

      • +1

Woolworths does give a second card to permanent part time and full time staff to give to a family member. From memory that family member's name is printed onto the card. Casuals get one card only.

It has always been policy that the card can only be presented by the person whose name is on it. It's just not enforced very often.

    It's pretty ridiculous customer service

What has this got to do with customer service?
It's an issue of an Employee not doing the right thing.

Pity the poor full price paying customer, waiting in line, for all this nonsense to be sorted.

    • I agree, it's ridiculous

  • It's pretty ridiculous customer service, because now my mum has to travel all the way to the city from Campbelltown to pick up her card.

If your mum's staff card was stolen and the staff did not take the actions they did in this case ie. Confiscate, you would have a completely different attitude.

You guys like to nitpick what people say huh…
Like I said, my aim was not to whinge and complain, but to inform and warn others who are doing it.

    • Noted… but your post says otherwise

      • Yea I realise that after all the comments.. I should make my post clearer next time.. I guess it's easy to misunderstand motives/intentions when you only have words to read from.

Woolies must take this quite seriously they sent a warning letter to my daughter saying to many different debit cards were being used to make purchases and if it was to continue they would investigate and confiscate card.In this case the third party use had been approved by management so issue was resolved quickly.

    • Doesn't your daughter know about eGftcard? It is absolutely fine with many eGiftcards being used.

      • Yes she did you are correct but the other agreed to parties could not use them for reasons i am not going to get into.

  • +1

Surprised some employees actually bother checking. I would imagine they couldn't care less who uses the card unless the person serving you was the manager, 2IC or a higher level person.

    • Some employees are just looking for a reason to feel outraged

      • +2

Or just doing their job properly.

  • +1

My daughter has a Coles card, but was given two as she is a permanent employee. One for herself and one to give to a family member (which I have).

You should go self-checkout and have the card number scanned from your mobile screen.Safer and no physical card.

    • -1

Card number can no longer be scanned from mobile screen it must be manually entered by staff.

      • The card number is just a Rewards card number.I don't think Woolies will bother customers to enter the Rewards cards manually at the self-checkout.

        • The machines at the stores where the people i know work differentiate mobile phone from physical card

        • @coin saver: Today I did the manned checkout and the staff did manually input my regular Rewards card number from mobile screen like you said.I did not use my friend's staff card due to the good offer on my own card.So to make it simpler, always do self-checkout if you are not the person whoes name is on the staff discount card.

      • I was told this a while ago (late last yr) by a BWS staff member that I needed the actual card when I used my wow card (which is also a 2nd staff card-my son works for woolies) on the sto card app. She said they cant verify the card if using the app.

Woolies must be ok with it now as they are promoting using your reward card via their digital wallet app.
