Looking to Buy New Ultrabook on a Budget ($1200)

Hi guys,

I'm in need for a new laptop and am fond of ultra books due to battery life and portability. I would also like to do a bit of gaming like diablo3, Cs:go and league of legends. I'm trying to spend no more than $1200 under $1000 if possible.

I'm a big fan of dell xps 13 & 15 due to there bezels but have been slightly turned off due to reports of the coil whine(more so for the xps13) and price. Can anyone recommend something?

If not an ultra then something not to heavy and bulky. Preferably 13" but will go 15".

  • " I'm trying to spend no more than $1200 under $1000 if possible."… Our budgets are quite different…

  • Try looking at the Lenovo deals that pop up occasionally here on Ozbargain. Most are roughly around $1000 or so which is in your price range. Right now there's a special on the E570 thats around $1000 with coupon.

Dell also has specials at the moment. I read good reviews on the Dell Inspiron 5000 15" which can also suit your budget

Also check out the Refurbs for even more discounts.

I know these are bigger laptops, but generally you would need a decent graphics card to play games better rather than the integrated ones that come in the ultrabooks.

    • The E series are not ultrabooks, they have the heft and thickness of a regular notebook. They are also much more budget than Dell XPS's, and more in line with an Inspiron.

that said if you are feeling particularly bold, OP can try the Xiaomi ultrabook, though note this variant is without the Nvidia gpu.

if you want the Nvidia 940mx option you'd have to drop about $1k for this one

  • If you haven't already check out Dave Lee on YouTube also known as Dave 2D.

He has a great tech channel and one of his focuses are laptops and ultrabooks.

He does great on the surface and some in depth reviews of different laptops and etc and even gives gaming benchmarks and most importantly price bracket information.

For example I learnt that a 1050ti laptop odd the sweet spot atm for gaming not sure what it is for ultra books and it ultimately depends on your use case example video editing uses more ram but not much gpu while gaining can be the opposite.

Regardless a ssd benefits most users but the very basic user i.e just web browsing/YouTube/movies/very light browser gaming/Facebook social media/emails

I think I remember him praising the xps 13 or 15 very highly so you must be on the right track..I guess if you wanted really cheap deals I would search what was on special last black Friday or cyber Monday or around Christmas deals and try gumtree or eBay that for American and Australian second hands and just add an adapter or what not.

But yeah highly recommend checking out Dave's channel he has one of the better ones out there imho if you just want a simple light recommendation or review.

But yeah either that or take scrimshaws advice he or she is our resident computer or tech expert and just generally very overall-y knowledgeable know it all guy in a good way.

  • Same suggestion I made in another thread yesterday. Both are the 6th gen processors, so you're looking at Intel HD 520 for integrated graphics. It should run the above games well enough however.

They've also got a more cost efficient version:

  • Check out Lenovo Ideapad 710s, 13.3 inch, built in graphics tho. But u can't ask for more at 1.1kg!
