What determines the price of Rego in Victoria?

My car registration fee has gradually been increasing every year. It was about $700 last year, now it's $750.
This is for an Audi, a mate of mine with a Volkswagon is paying $100 less than me.
How is the rego cost determined? Age of the car? Suburb of residence? Number of traffic violations?

They throw a dart at a board.

      Bikies

    • Thanks, that's the answer.
I moved from Rural -> Outer -> Metro over the past few years, that explains the price increase.

  • It's market value first then they increase the fee every year because they want to

    • Market value is about $5,000 now

should've got a VW, the Audi screams "im trying to look rich"

    • My next car will be a VW, I bought this before I discovered ozbargain

      • why stop at VW, get a KIA.

        • Honestly, I'm thinking of trying 'no car' (depending on where I live when mine dies) and just using PT + the occasional Uber.
Petrol, repairs, the fact that it's a depreciating asset, speeding fines, parking fines, insurance, rego.
I wonder how many Ubers I can catch / year for all that.

        • @idonotknowwhy: speeding fines and parking fines are entirely preventable, not a running cost. They are a stupid tax.

        • @Euphemistic: I just think of speeding fines as another tax I have to pay.
Only had one parking fine actually, I just forgot.

        • @idonotknowwhy: I meant they are a tax on the stupid. (I've had my share too)

In NSW the rego cost is based on vehicle weight and usage type. My 4x4 ute cost about $150 more than my old forester, but is about the same as my wife's 4x4 wagon. (all private use)

Has nothing to do with the make/model of car, only the location of registration.

If you have any family that live in the country, register your car at their address under your name. Save yourself $100 :)

    • Great idea.
Insurance premiums went down as I moved closer, so I'll have to do the calculations.

Edit: Actually, I'm fine with paying more. Road maintenance is probably more expensive for metro areas.
This seems like one of the few fair things happening in Victoria.

  • Mine is $790. paid today.

  • i think the suburb where you live or the car lives determines the rego prices. I have tried putting up different addresses on the Vicroads website to test my theory and yeah, i gives you different figures depending on the suburb.

  • Which doesn't make any sense … makes sense where the car is garaged for insurance purposes but not registration.

    • I guess more people get hit by cars in the city (higher population density).
      Rego goes towards TAC
