Washing Machine Died. Miele or Bosch Next?

Our Electrolux front loader has stopped working yesterday (yes the day after EBay's 20% off finished) and as it's been problematic from day one we want to replace it instead of paying to repair it.
Looking at either a Miele WKB 130 or a Bosch WAW32640
Miele seems to control their pricing which is a turn off to me but the wife seems to like them so I was wondering if anyone has any tips to maximise a deal on these?
I don't mind the Bosch myself but appliances onlin have them for $1479 so at 20% off it could of been under $1200 plus delivery.
Any chance of getting one for around this price at the moment?
Any other machines people can recommend around the 8kg mark?

Buy 10% off DJ gift cards and order the Miele from DJ.

    • What deal is that? I can't seem to find it.

My lg 10kg front loader has been going strong for 10 years.

I have a Samsung washing machine and it works well. I bought it for around $600. I am not sure spending double for a similar sized washing machine will make it twice as good?

    • Am on my second Samsung since 1999. Their washing machines are incredible value.

    Happy wife happy life.

Get the MIele, much better. Quality machine and service.

    • Miele…Quality machine not sure…lots of cheaply made components that fail. Service very expensive and parts outrageously expensive considering how cheaply they are made.

  • we have a basic Bosch - 10+ years old.

recently replaced the brushes in motor - very simple to fix and only $10

Asko - although have heard the Bosch go alright too.

  • Had a new Bosch front loader in my last place. Loved it. Super quiet, efficient and no problems with clothes. Took a while to figure out how to turn off the beeps. Frequently used the timed start so the load went on at 2am.

  • I recently purchased a LGW1200D (7kg) because it was only $550. I initially wanted 8kg+, but this 7kg actually does our family of 5 just fine.

  • Lots in here having issues with Electrolux but mine still going strong and almost 10 years now.
But I would definitely pick Miele for dishwasher.

  • Not that I need a new WM but why front loader as opposed to top loader?

    • As someone who has always had a front loader, why would you want a top loader?

Genuinely interested to hear why. Front loader is pretty handy as you can put stuff on it.

      • Heh, the opposite here, always had a top loader. I like it because I don't have to bend/squat to access it, opeing a front loader door would be a bit squeezy in our tiny laundry I can fit more clothes in it (I think?) and I can open it up mid-cycle to add more if I miss anything.

        • Some interesting points here:

          http://www.canstarblue.com.au/appliances/laundry/top-loader-…

However every comparison I read seems to contradict each other.

We have our front loader, and dryer, up at bench height and have a slide out bench underneath it. Really easy to get clothes in and out of the washer/dryer without having to bend. We also have a set of sorting baskets underneath so we can sort out the laundry for wash and then put the loads in as each one finishes. We barely use the dryer but you can take it out of the washer, slide along to the dryer, and then load that up.

Front loaders use less water and, as they don't have an agitator, things don't get caught on it. The downside is you can't add anything after you start the wash.

I would go for a Miele front loader, we are currently on our second - the first lasted 13 years and we decided on a new one rather than repair. The guy who installed the new one was going to refurbish ours and resell it. I think we got $50 for it from him.

  • hi, what's wrong with your electrolux?

    • Won't go past filling with water.
No error code, it just sits there and does nothing.
Seems to fill and drain fine but the drum won't move.

      • cool, I was given an electrolux with a very similar issue. seems to work (goes through a full cycle -fill,wash,rinse,drain- with no problem) but drum does not move at all.

I'm wondering if the belt has stretched or whether the motor is shot (though it sounds like it is moving) need to investigate further.

        what model is yours?

      WOAH!!! we're washing machine bros

having a look at will be this weekends job.

      • My in laws have just offered their old maytag commercial grade top loader which had been going strong for 20+ years so we might take that for now and see if I can take a look at the Electrolux.

        • maytag is a very solid machine.

        • @altomic:
Not sure how you have gone but I've been advised that my fault is likely the carbon motor bushes which are cheap and easy to replace.
I'll be having a look their week.

        • @dan76n: I got distracted by my pile of laptops (12) and desktops (5) that need sorting out.

Carbon brushes - I believe these are compatible ones and available from china for US$1.46 delivered via aliexpress

          bought some to test.

I just had a look at my machine. tipped the machine on an angle, removed the base plate to get access to the motor, put it on spin cycle and no movement from the motor. the pump works and it is making all the other noises. US$1.46 seems a small price to pay to trouble shoot this machine.

        • @altomic:
I've taken out the carbon brushes and it's these ones
          That we need.
They are $40 from a local supplier or $30 on eBay so I'll have a crack at these and see what happens.

        • @altomic:
Better still these are click and collect eta 10th April so I'm getting them.

        • @dan76n: cool. once they arrive then let me know how they went. the aliexpress ones i ordered should be here in 4 weeks.

        • @dan76n: received the brushes today. will have a play on the weekend. I see you had good luck with your machine. excellent.

any tips for the swap over?

        • @altomic: fitted the brushes today. BAM - working machine. pretty stoked for US$1.46 fix.

  • Repair the unit
Should be bushings / brushes shot
    Easy enough to fix

    • I'm getting a bit of a new motor burn smell. Is this normal after replacing carbon brushes?

      • Yeah normal
        They're bedding in

Fixed. It was the bushes. Cost under $30 to repair.

  • Samsung.
