New Citibank Plus Mastercard Not Useable on PayPal

I have activated and set the pin for the new card.

So I went into Paypal to update my details, but when I tried pressing the increase spending limit text which should debit $2 but it states that I cannot use this card…

I don't want to commit to buying anything on eBay yet because I'm pretty sure the old card is deactivated once the new one is activated as the card in the Change ATM Pin link is the new one and doesn't give an option for the old one. The new card doesn't seem to allow spending on Paypal since it cannot debit $2.

I gave Citibank a call and they said it should be fine.

I believe the underlying problem is mostly like that the card is probably deemed as a prepaid mastercard or something on Paypal's end, but I haven't figured it out yet.

I'm hoping that someone has figured a way around it.

Is this game over for cheap overseas purchases? Has anyone tried buying something from Aliexpress with the new card? I know most prepaid cards are not accepted on Aliexpress. I hope this can be resolved before the 28th of March when I am going to get something off Aliexpress.

In general, is anyone having problems with the new card?

  • I got a renewed card two weeks ago, it was a VISA :)

I find that new cards tend to have some teething issues. when mac bank first went live with their debit mastercard, tigerair was not recognising it as a debit mastercard and was charging the $8.50 booking fees. i think this was fixed soon after.

might be a similar issue with paypal.

check the bank identification number and see what its classed as

    https://www.bincodes.com/bin-checker/

my debit master card from CBA works fine with Paypal

generally with the banking system if its a completely new BIN being used there could be a 30 day delay as payment processors work of a list of current BINs

  • I have tried changing the Billing Address to see if it does anything. Apparently it doesn't need to have the country field Australia anymore. The old address has Sydney in the Suburb tab, when you press the lightly coloured X button on the right you can see the field is the Suburb.

It makes me wonder how international purchases on eBay work without a country as some senders can be confused. e.g. Victoria is in Canada too. It makes me wonder if Paypal just hired some bad coders at the moment. Do the eBay and Paypal address no longer have to match?

Anyway, I went off topic, gee, Paypal is a pain to get working…

I think I'll wait until the weekend is over and give it a few days to see if it gets working. Otherwise, I'll have to go find the contact details for Paypal.

  • I can confirm that I'm having the same issue as you've described with my new Mastercard debit card from Citibank (BIN: 529757).

Won't let me verify the card, gives "We're sorry. You can't use that card. Please use a different one."

This is likely an issue that needs to be taken up with PayPal.

  • More comments after looking at the card visibly.

There is no Cirrus or Maestro symbol.

    changed:
However, it seems like CBA mastercard works overseas too and that is missing symbols.

    • On the paper that came with the card, it actually said it was part of the PLUS network, which is completely incorrect.
It's part of the Maestro/Cirrus network by default because it is a Mastercard.

I have already used the new Mastercard debit card on purchases overseas, and it works fine. Not sure what is going on with PayPal.

  • Problem isolated to Paypal.

Successfully paid just a few minutes ago on Aliexpress with my new card…

  • Is there an option to switch the citibank back to a visa? I already have a mastercard and needed a visa.
Any other banks out there with the same international perks as what the citibank visa had?

My sister's new Mastercard doesn't work. It's a known issue at Citibank.

    • Yep I told them nearly two weeks ago and a fix is coming "soon" and they tell you to use another card. All well and good except for the fact that their card is the only card that I have that doesn't charge international transaction fees!

  • I received a new mastercard about 3 weeks ago and I added it to PayPal without a problem

    • Adding was ok, have you tried to use the new card for a PayPal payment yet?

  • Issue is fixed
