Are Expensive Matresses Worth The Money?

What do Ozbargainers think about paying top dollar for mattresses? I see the price range can go from a few hundred into 5 figures for a queen… Is there any real difference? Seen a few and am leaning towards getting one on the cheaper side.

It's going to be a matrimonial mattress, so those soft memory foam mattresses I've ruled out as I've heard they make bedroom activities feel like you're stuck in quicksand.

What mattresses do Ozbargainers sleep on?

A good mattress is worth the money!

  • Aldi (and online stores) sell spring mattresses rolled up for around $300. Not sure how they compare to expensive mattresses but they're perfectly find for me.

  • Dunno no idea I have always wondered this too.. I mean how different could they seriously be compared to a broken run down mattress.. as long as it's sturdy and not broken it should be the same.. price is just price heck I bet maybe even some of the cheaper mattresses might be more comfortable or better just because.. I don't think it's like computers or technology if that is what you are asking and more like bottles of wine.. taste is king and matters most.. But heck art the ends of the day to each their own… imho go to snooze or forty winks and get a bed firmness test check done on one of their bed machines that can help you identify exactly what kind of bed you might need for your specific use case scenario.. for me it was a specific number in true medium to firm region.. got mine checked near Bankstown nsw but if you are elsewhere just go in store and ask they might have it.. the machine I used looked like a normal electronic massage bed but with all sorts of monitors and stuff for the staff to play around and input data and run the diagnostic tests.

  • one of the best investments you'll make in life is a good nights sleep

    No.

Sure, a cheap <$300 mattress might be crap.
But a >$2,000 mattress is bull, you pay for the label and the Placebo effect.

Just stay in the sweet spot of $500 - $1,000.

**unless you have a health related reason to buy a special-made bed.

Went through all this hand-wringing last year and ended up going for a Sleeping Duck, best move ever. I think it cost about 2K for the mattress and base delivered but the clincher was they give you a 100 night 'trial' and if you don't like it they will give you a refund and send a local charity around to collect it. Our experience was that it was very comfortable from day one but took us a few months to get used to the temperature difference between that and old waterbed. So after nearly 12 months it it still very comfortable and we usually get a good night's sleep (unless one of the neighbours stupid dogs starts barking. :) ). Other online retailers offer similar deals but I can't comment on those.

  • "if you don't spend $10,000 on a mattress then you must be poor" - loser who spends $10,000 on a mattress.

I paid $350 for my mattress from captain snooze 10 years ago- very happy with it. bought a $50 "topper" 3 years ago and it re-invigorated it.

  • Thanks for all the responses!

Went down to the megamall today with the missus to jump up and down on a few beds. Ended up choosing this one http://jameslane.com.au/our-furniture/mattresses/queen-bed-m…

As Kangal said, $500-1000 seemed like the sweet spot with no real difference felt on the more expensive ones

  • I had a hip issue that improved dramatically and almost overnight with a serious mattress upgrade. It does make a difference. I spent about $1800 on just the mattress about 10 years ago. Ultimately, choose what you can afford but make sure it feels amazing. The only downside to the really plush pillow-tops is can be harder to find sheets with the depth required.

  • I was going to say memory foam, got a very descent one from le cornu about 4 years ago and that was 1k … i get lots of comments on how comfortable it is

The bedding (mattress) industry itself seems to be fairly self-invested in terms of anti-competitive practices; a large mattress manufacturer sells their mattress to two different retailers (the exact same mattress), but each retailer, seemingly complicit with the manufacturer, names their mattress different models so that a consumer isn't able to price-match one retailer against the other and take advantage of the competitive marketplace, whereas when you buy a TV or a washing machine, mostly, each retailer will sell the same model so you can compare prices.

This activity also occurs in other industries but it would seem to be more blatant and pervasive in mattress retailing for some reason or other.

My point? You really have to question the value that you're actually getting when you're spending big money on a mattress (what is it that you're paying for?)

As others have sagely advised a mattress that you find comfortable is worth the money (but consider that many of the more expensive mattress options are only available from stores where you would be unlikely to be able to return the mattress if you don't find it acceptable).

A mattress is a really personal investment, so personally I think that it's important to find a retailer that will at least allow you to return it if you don't think it's suitable.

You could pose the same question as 'is a cheap mattress worth the risk?' If it's comfortable then yeah sure.

I know it's vague, but at any rate I hope my short rant might help slightly.
