Strategy Time! - Best way to bargain down a base model 2017 Subaru WRX 10-15% off RRP

Hi Ozbargain

I'm on the hunt for a new car, and the 2017 Subaru WRX - Base Model- Manual has certainly caught my eye

I'm probably going to aim for the base model with the hope I can somehow manage to get 10-15% off the RRP(~40k)
Hopefully this will bring it down to around ~$35k (drive away) and hoping to score extended warranty to 5 years (from their base of 3), cargo mat, floor mat and also a full tank of petrol!

Now I know alot of you out there are car bargaining experts so apart from the usual

  1. Buy near the end of the month
  2. Visit multiple dealerships and use their quotes as a bargaining tool
  3. Never hesitating to walk away from a dealership

What other tips/tricks do u suggest?
Right now subaru has a promotion for free extended warranty to 5 years!
Am i geting sucked into this? (do these promotions occur frequently?)

I've watched a few youtube videos an John Cadogan from auto expert gives alot of useful tips, but i'm not sure if alot of it is BS or not!?

Other WRX owners out there, how much did u manage to bargain down your car to?

Is there anything i'm missing out on and what other add ons/accessories should also be included when doing a deal with Subabru?

Is there anything I should be wary about?

And for those out there with different cars, do you have any other recommendations (i'm hearing alot of golf, golf golf~! but im skeptical about deisel gate, low resale value, (i hear alot of anti VAG rhetoric out there)

TLDR: What tips and tricks have you guys used to get 10-15% off your Car purchase?

Thanks so much guys!!

  • Just be mentally strong.

Don't get bullied by sales people and don't be afraid to walk away.

15% is a huge discount already.

VW golf is also a great car!

    wow, car mats!!!!
    wow, full tank of petrol!!!

are you going to negotiate for paint protection as well?

seriously?!?! car mats and a full tank of petrol are bargaining points??!?!!! that's like amateur hour. if a dealer was offering to throw them in then you know they are treating you like a schmuck.

um, look on car sales. find the the exact same car at the cheapest price. approach a dealer and ask if he/she will beat that price.

    if yes, buy car.
    if no, walk away

    end of story

    • Get pen thrown at you by sales person after asking for the price. Sorry, that was Mazda.

  • When I bought my WRX a few years ago I found that as all the dealerships are owned by Subaru, they were not interested in budging on price (but would throw in a few extras)

I ended up buying second hand

There are some non-Subaru Australia owned dealerships, but generally they are further away from the city or regional cities/towns.

      • +1. The two Canberra dealerships wouldn't budge much at all on price for me. Used Motorbuys, and ended up getting a much better price from a dealer in Wagga (about 2 hours away) for the exact car I wanted including options.

OT, but Canberra dealer told me to let him know if I found a better price so he could try to match it and "keep things local". So I sent him my better price, and he then basically accused me of making it up as it wasn't on Subaru letterhead (despite it listing off 10-15 price components which I would obviously have no idea about).

  • why dont you just get auto expert to get it for you, like john talks about on each of his cringe worthy videos.
ps he isnt that much cheaper…….

    • he talks a good game, and a lot of the things he says are true, but he's going to make money off you just like anyone else is

In Melbourne, all the Subaru dealers withing 30km from CBD are owned by the same person. I found similar for Toyota and Mitsubishi. Ended up buying my new Toyota in Frankston and new Mitsubishi from Knox for really good prices. $22k down to $16 and $43k down to $32k.

    • Spot on!! Inchcape own all of the Subaru franchises within 40km of the CBD for all Australian Capital cities. They dont hav eto compete as much because they are all drawing from the same pool of vehicles. In Melbourne, the dealerships at Franston and Lillydale are independent and go straight to Subaru as they are outside of Inchcape's territory.

About 8 years ago i bought a Brand New Manual WRX from Lillydale and managed to get a great discount, much better than the inner city dealerships. I would play Frankston and Lillydale off against each other. Wait until the end of next month when they will already be looking at their sales figures for the end of financial year then ask them if they can beat the price from each other. Be prepared to either walk away or give a deposit if they give you a great deal.

    • $22k to $16 that's a lot, about 27% off. Which model is it?

      • It was a Toyota Yaris.

I can't speak about Subaru specifically but..

Base models usually don't have as much wiggle room for price.

Promo's are often taken into consideration when bargaining.

Don't open with the extra's. They should be added when you've come to a price the dealer won't move on.

The biggest tip I can give is don't be afraid to walk away.

I managed to save quite a bit by leveraging a fleet quote from a relative's workplace against an ex-demo version of the car I wanted. Went from 66k RRP -> 58k new -> 54k ex-demo with car mats and a full tank of petrol (~18% off RRP). It's a KIA Carnival though, so probably more room to move due to lower demand.

    • i can assure you that a kia carnival has NEVER been sold for 66k. They're a car that gets heavily discounted

      • I would assume that the majority of cars don't sell at RRP, not sure what your point is?

  • Look at carsales.com for prices on demo WRX's that is the price you should pay for a brand new model, just contact as many dealers as you can and tell them you will put a deposit down on the spot and are a serious buyer.

  • It's a good target price, but it is also a very old car design. Aside from some going over, the mechanical side of this car has remained constant for the last 20 years at least.

  • Through tough negotiation I managed to get the guy down to 39K brand new for a base WRX drive away in WR Blue with mats, petrol, cargo tray and extended 5 years warranty.

I stood firm at 38500 and he said no the manager wont accept anything below 39000.

So i left it that at that and will try again next month!!

    • Have they rung you again and dropped the $500 off the price?

  • You won't buy a brand new wrx for 35k. It just won't happen.

    High 30s, yes, 35, no

  • 2018 model is around the corner, why not just wait a few more weeks (or 2 months may be) before taking the plunge. Bet you'll get the best manual at 35 once the 2018 is out.
