New Phone Ideas - Samsung Galaxy S8 + The Good Guys Sale?

My Galaxy S6 was having small issues so I had the good guys send it back
Samsung offerred me a full refund so now I'm holding out for the S8

Is anyone else waiting for it and praying it releases alongside a 20% off sale like the S6 and S7? (i think)

Or if not what else are you keen on? The G6 looks pretty good, the Pixel 2 is too far away for me

What do yous reckon?

  • I personally think if you want to get LG G6, you might as well consider S7 or S7 Edge as an option (Snapdragon 821 was from last year and S7 and S7 Edge are on sale).

The rumours I've been hearing makes me go meh for S8, I don't think it will offer what I want from a flagship price tag. The design looks nice, but RAM, the performance (both of them are being leaked via benchmarks, though, as with all leaked benchmarks, might be fake), battery size, camera not being dual camera, and the fingerprint scanner all make me go meh.

Actually, I think Snapdragon 835's benchmark with a test model (not S8) was officially released and it was kinda meh if I remember correctly.

These of course are based on rumours, if Samsung announces the phone (should be in 4 ish days?) and it's drastically different from what I've been hearing, I will be more than happy.

If I were in a position for a new phone, I'd wait till Q3 and Q4. Few of those irks I had there are likely going to be fixed and more importantly more phones will have access to Snapdragon 835. That is, if you don't want a Chinese brand phone, more (and cheaper) options are available with Chinese phones.

    • Keen to steer clear of chinese phones, purely because I got a rull refund I might as well make the most of it
I'm stuck with an iPhone 5 until my next phone that's driving me up the wall.

You're right it's not amazingly next tier compared to the s7 is it :/, this is annoying

      • S6 to S7 is still very nice transition in my opinion, the battery life difference is day and night (talking from my experience with S7 vs my S6).
S6 does feel unpolished compared to S7, in some sense. The ideas on S6 were improved heaps on S7.

If you don't need something premium, Galaxy A series in my opinion looks decent (though not at the price they are asking, I'd wait till they discontinue 2017 models). The battery life on it should be better than the flagships (because of low performance and lower resolution screen). Replacing the screen should be cheaper as well. Though if you go down that road, I think there are other options available from other companies.

Anyways, my opinions are based on rumours, the phone will be properly announced in like 4 days time.

        • Whats your take now? bout the same? lol

        • @lilviss: About the same, I don't think it's too far off from what I was expecting.

S8 didn't make me go wow. I will mention that GPU for Exynos seems to be better than Snapdragon in benchmark, but in all likelyhood, it'd make little difference. The benchmarks seem to indicate small improvements from S7 on performance though. I am not sure whether that's intentionally done for battery life or throttling, those needs proper benchmarking after release in my opinion.

There were few nifty bits you might enjoy. USB-C on S8 seems to be able to do video output, the bundled earphone seem to be in another league from older Samsung earphones (from what I've been reading at least, measurements and such, though S6 earphones were awful). DeX looked like it needed bit of improvement (1st gen, don't buy unless you absolutely have to).

As a S6 owner, I am not going to go for S8, not because it's not an improvement, but because it's offering less than what I'd expect from two generation gap. Be fair, that's kinda what the market has become, but still.

It kinda reminds me of Note 7, in that the only wow factor from S7 was the design (other than the pen). Like Note 7, I might get tempted if I get to see one IRL.
