Reverse Phone Number Look up

Hi all

Long story short, received some threatening sms messages from a random number a while back.
The messages indicated that it was from a person who knows me and is presumably known to me.
Just wondering what pathways there are for putting a name to the mobile number?

Have tried free online reverse phone number searches and have also briefly enquired with private investigator companies who seem to give a 50/50 chance of finding out the owner of the number.

Anyone successfully done such a search?

ADDIT:
Thanks for the replies so far. Have tried calling the phone many times. Says unavailable basically so dead end…

Let's all ring him one at a time, starting at midnight.

There's an app called truecaller which lets you search a number thru a database of contacts but it will ask to have access to your contacts. Might be worth the trade off but there's a risk you won't find anything.

    Good luck.

  • Have you tried borrowing a phone from someone to call it? A relative perhaps?

Call them back using a different number, and pretend to be someone else eg. A buyer on gumtree, picked up lost phone which had their number etc

    ..a while back.

Have the messages continued? If not, just leave it.

Curiosity, I understand. But after you find out, what are you going to do? Unless you plan on taking some sort of drastic action when you find out who it is, there's really no point wasting your time.

    • Curiosity yes. How about if it were a friend of yours who you thought you knew well. Would you want to know? I think I would…

      • If it were a friend of yours who you knew well, you'd already have their number.

And if they used one of their other friend's numbers who you don't already have, then you wouldn't know anyway.

        • Obviously they wouldn't use their actual number. Whoever it is has a second sim card for their alter ego. Not hard to obtain in this day and age

  • Dial <1831> # then ask who are you?:)

    • Tried…basically the person just uses the number / sim card for pranking / threatening purposes. I assume though that when a sim card is activated / registered it requires a name? Or am I wrong on this?

      • Yes but you wouldn't be able to get those info unless you have a court case so best choice is to block that number. :)

        • Yes but you wouldn't be able to get those info unless you have a court case

The information is available to police when a complaint is made, it doesn't have to go to court.

        • @Maverick-au:
Information can access to cops but they only accessible if its critical.
They don't really care about prank messages unless its critical but they still not going to give to you.

You go to cop shop, they get your details and tell you to ignore them, they will investigate if needed.

Information can access to cops but they only accessible if its critical.

Once a complaint is made they will look up the number and see who owns it. Even if this doesn't go to court this information can be made available to the OP if the complaint has merit.

They don't really care about prank messages unless its critical but they still not going to give to you.

This isn't correct. What part of threatening messages continues to elude you?

Why bother to give advice if you don't know what you're talking about?

        • @Maverick-au:
You think COP has access to information like what you see on CSI?
Privacy law it bit too powerful.
Op got to the cop shop, show them the messages, then you can answer the above questions accordingly :)

Are you ten years old? Police can look up phone numbers and see who operates that service during an enquiry, this had nothing to do with CSI but IPND.

You really do have no idea if you think the only way to access the details of a phone service is via the courts.
