Slow Internet and Service Provider Contracts

I currently have ADSL2 internet with Spintel and have considered changing providers to another company. My internet speed at present peaks at about 3.5mbps, which is enough to watch netflix OR watch youtube but definitely not sufficient for doing a few things at once. I understand that if I change ISP, theres no guarantee that I will get a better result.

I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who has made the switch from one ISP to another and found that their new provider was worse. Did you just put up with it or did you switch? Without having read any contracts or product disclosure statements, can you cancel your service with them or move to another ISP if you find their service (read: download speed) to be worse than your previous provider, without financial penalty?

Keen to hear your thoughts and experiences.

Read this first and then think about getting another contract with another ISP. Slow ADSL speeds are mostly attributed with how far you live from the exchange and the condition of the wiring and hardware you are using.

There's zero guarantee that swapping to another ISP will improve speeds.

  • Understand the technology and the reason for the speed loss first.

As I said, I understand that changing won't guarantee a better result.

  • Consider signing up with a new ISP without contract and with minimum or no set up costs, to see if there's any improvement from your current ISP. A good one to try it out would be Mate Communicate as there's $0 set up fee if you BYO modem.
