Travelling "somewhere" at short notice

I have had a last minute approval for holidays in April (anywhere between dates 22nd to 30th). What is the best travel comparison website for booking something with an open mind to going anywhere within my budget ? 2 adults 2 smaller kids - I'm travelling from Perth so the main place of course is Bali which would be the cheapest option but was thinking of maybe somewhere different.

    How about Indonesia?

    • Yeah looks like Bali will be the cheapest destination especially as its like our second home here from Perth !

Kuala Lumpur; very cheap hotels. Usually good prices on Malaysia Airlines (which has been completely revamped into a quality "regional" airline) through Bestjet.
This page has discount codes for hotels. KL hotels are usually very cheap, even the 5-star ones. Note that if you use cashrewards, you can get extra cashback, although most hotel sites (except Expedia) will not pay cashback if you used a coupon.

    • Thanks - we have been previously to KL but didn't find it too much of an exciting destination to be honest, not too much to do with the kids especially. Sort of felt like it was just a stop over for 1 day not for a holiday as such.
But I do appreciate your suggestion.

For kids, Singapore is great because it is safe and has a lot of things to visit, including Santosa Island, most of which are English-friendly. But Singapore is not cheap (for accommodation).

I think as a general rule, cheap <> 'kids friendly' , or at least not if you want something "exciting". Keep in mind that young kids get tired quickly on holiday. In my experience, you want to go somewhere where food and transportation are easy (again, Singapore) so that you can crash at a cafe or return to your hotel whenever your kids are tired. Ensure to get a hotel close to a train station.

        • Singapore or Gold Coast are only things I know of that are close. Small kids have no interest in temples, history, different cuisines etc, which are the top things to do nearly everywhere, so they're going to be bored at 99% of places.

Singapore has theme parks, zoo, gardens, aquarium. Accommodation should be ok because your flights will be cheap from Perth. Short flight is also good. Transport is cheap. Food is (can be) cheap. Alcohol you didn't get duty free on the way in is very expensive. The activities $ could blow out very quickly though.

You may find with 4 people taxi is better than the train for some trips.

        • @rochow: agree about all, but wouldn't put small kids in a taxi without child seats though…

@Make it so: Ah yeah forgot about that, it's a hell of a lot easier to just do things without kids :)

        • @rochow: Ain't that a fact!

That's the one I was trying to think of - Adioso - thank you !

      $3000 on flights and accommodation.

  • Perth -> Singapore - then on to Koh Samui
(you can find cheap Thailand air & accom packages ex-Singapore thru www.Expedia.com.sg)

  • As someone who has travelled with 3 young kids I'd suggest Kl. Less expensive that Singapore. Easier/cheaper to rent an apartment. Cheaper to get taxi's. Etc. Lots too do. Legoland, butterfly park, etc. Shopping is great.

Two smaller kids - how about just drive up to Coral Bay? Maybe hire a campervan. They'll have a ball and you'll get well rested too.

how about hiring a campervan and taking the family for a drive. Plenty to see in your own backyard

    • Seconded. I found a great deal on that was basically like one of those relocation deals on a motorhome but for a guy who has his on www.shareacamper.com.au looking to get the vehicle back to his homebase in Melbourne. Had never done the Nullarbor before, what a drive!
