Foreign Exchange Overseas

Hi guys,
What do you guy do when you can't spent all the foreign currency you withdraw overseas? I'm using citiplus as suggested by ozbargain community, has anyone try to go to Citibank branch while overseas to swap back to Aussie dollar a it offer best rate?

*interesting piece of nugget, my Samsung phone automatically update to android version 'nougat' last night, awesome interface -)

Usually I try to estimate accurately how much I need to avoid such situations.

If a triffling amount, donate it to charity, have a slap up meal before leaving, or buy some stuff. If a bit more, convert it to another currency at a money changer. If likely to use the currency again, hang on to it; that's why I like the Euro, so many countries to use it in.

Unlike withdrawing money from an ATM, changing or depositing money at a Citibank branch would mean interacting with staff so time sucked up there. And during office hours.

BTW, a nugget is already a piece (in this case of information) so "piece of nugget" is a tautology. :)

Donate to charity?!!that's like breaking ozbargain code, anyway wondering if anyone has done it in the branch,if not probably just keep the kwon for souvenir

    • That's why I try hard not to have more than about $50 worth leftover at the end. Takes a bit of estimation. With the won I had a nice dinner at Incheon, followed by ice cream dessert then deposited the few bucks worth of won in a charity box.

Some currencies, like yen, could be used for later trips, not just to Japan but also could be changed in other countries receiving many Japanese tourists.

What I did with various currencies on recent trips:

China: Still have the RMB for future trips
Hong Kong: Still have the HKD for future trips
Fiji: Changed back to AUD at the airport
Thailand: Still have the TB for future trips
Taiwan: Used most up and left the rest to charity
Malaysia: Still have the MYR for future trips
Sri Lanka: Changed to EUR at the airport
S Korea: Used up as above
      Europe: Still have the EUR

Funny story: I once had some old Swiss francs, so old that the shops wouldn't accept them. So I went to a bank in Zürich, pulled them out of my wallet and pushed it over the counter to the cashier. She said: Sir, those are not Swiss francs, those are Euros. Oops, I had without looking pulled out Euro bills instead of the old Swiss francs out of the wallet. I did get the francs swapped for the new series after that.

  • The benefit of using Citibank is that you don't need to withdraw huge amounts.
Just get small chunks that last for 2-3 days. If you run out on the day you leave, it's no problem to just get another $20 or so.

I doubt that's a good idea. Banks tend to give you terrible rates. Use a local money changer.
Although I guess for most currencies you are more likely to get better rates in Australia.

Alternatively, wait until a friend/colleague goes to that country and exchange it with them at mid-market rate.
