Telstra network high data usage plan

We are living on a boat and on the move so telstra has the best mobile network for our needs.
We are using the Aldi xxl $45 prepaid with 8gb of data and it works fine except 8gb in not enough regularly leaving us short at months end.

Optus has a 30gb for a few dollars more, but their reception is average at best.

Does anyone know of another telstra reseller that does a comparable deal to Optus?

  • Have you investigated fixed wireless from Telstra? (they give you a wireless modem to recieve 4G)

Did I read right…. You are recommending Telstra?

    • FIXED wireless?
Does us being on the move using different towers affect eligibility or reception?

    • Won't work
Fixed wireless is dependant on locking onto 1 or more cells in your region / location
4G will work based on the ability to roam across multiple cells as the boat moves

Fixed wireless means you would need to point your antenna to a cell each time you pull the boat up, you could go down the road of omni-directional antenna, but I am not sure how this goes with fixed wireless - hence the name fixed wireless (fixed to a certain point)

4G can be used with an omni-directional antenna, as can vividwireless

  • https://www.telstra.com.au/broadband/mobile-broadband/plans#… has a post-paid $45/month data-only 12 month plan with 10GB, or 20GB for $70/month.

Boost mobile is also a Telstra reseller with plans including additional data on weekends - http://boost.com.au/plans/ - maybe it might suit you more?

Have you considered trying another network (eg Optus) with an external antenna?

    • Not keen in locking into a data only plan

Boost Was almost there but the extra data weekend? Does that mean I am forced to use it on the weekend, its not there Monday?

Optus will require new phones as well, we tried jeenee originally but had a very poor result as the phone is not optus band compatible.

You likely need to be more flexible to achieve what you want. Telstra (and Telstra reseller) 4G plans just don't include the data Optus and Voda do.

Suggest you get a cheap data-only modem and an external antenna and use another carrier for data. Use the Telstra SIM for calls.

        • Like I said, other carriers don't have the range on water that telstra has so they are not really suitable.

Hoping telstra will stop the gouge soon enough and start matching or getting near to competitors deals.

        • @Davros: not sure what you mean by range on water. The underlying technology and frequency of the low 3G bands used by the carriers shouldn't be terribly different. Have you tried any external antennas? What did they reveal?

People have been waiting for Telstra to reduce pricing for as long as they have had a mobile network. They know they have premium coverage and they damn sure continue to charge for it.

        • @Davros:

          Good luck
Telstra aren't in it to offer huge data caps
theyre in it for the proft
they run a business not a charity
I have found most carriers with an antenna ample on a boat for data

        • @kipps:

This is correct, telstra can charge what they want but they do upgrade towers / fix issues much quicker than other carriers
Telstra do have a lot of better range on the water as they use 850mhz vs 900mhz of telstra and Optus
Also with band 28 4G over 700mhz it pushes the range a little further, although not as good as 3G, I have had Telstra work 30-50km out from docks perfectly

    how nice is your boat?

    • +1

      more details of boat please.

    • Terrible. :-)

  • Perhaps you can use Optus as your main SIM and keep a Telstra SIM on the side when you don't get Optus coverage

  • Vividwireless Unlimited 4G for 89 a month and you can get a 360 degree antenna to pick up signals
depending on how far you go out this is the best deal
capped at 10/1 but you do get a 30 day try it out gurantee first
