Which card to get for AMEX backup?

Hi guys,

Thanks to you I have found my way to amex explorer.
What card would you recommend to get for situations where amex isnt accepted to maximise my points earn.
Should it be another cc, a prepaid card bought with amex or something else?
I dont have any experience with prepaid cards. Would they be ok for everyday usage (paywave, no extra fees etc) or rather go with visa/master cc?

Thanks

Currently the ANZ Visa has $1 = 1 QFF point - which is what I use as my backup card where Amex is not accepted. The first year is no annual free. At the end of the year, simply cancel and look for another deal. :)

    • Sorry, should have specified - my current backup card is velocity global wallet (no fees, $2=1pt), but i would prefer to collect points that are transferrable to any ff account or have a card that would earn more than my current velocity one.

  • Checkout the ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures card, I'm using it as my non Amex card. There was a deal a while back where you also got 60k velocity points as a bonus.

    • Cool. Will look into that

  • From the ozbargain credit card guide, the Coles Mastercard seems to be very good as a backup card. However upon further research, there seems to be lots of negative reviews on it.

  • Is there a reason none of you have suggested any prepaid cards that i could buy using amex explorer and get 2pts per dollar?

I thought these might be better option for earning points

    • Most pre-paid cards cost money. I don't think there is a single pre-paid card that is free. So, it depends on whether you believe the extra points to be worth the cost of the pre-paid card.
