Recommendation for roller door motor replacement

My garage roller door motor decides to die this morning. It has been dying a slow death and have been fixed twice in the past. I would like to replace it now.

It is an old motor driving a chain driven mechanism part of the roller door. I guess I can just go to Bunnings and buy a compatible motor but would like to know if there are better options out there? What would ozbargainers recommend for something that is cheap and cheerful?

  • No idea if it's the best, but I have Merlin MR850EVO installed on 2 doors. Drives the doors up and down easily with soft start and stop. Seemed to be the best value online with DIY install. The installation was relatively easy, but I was replacing a similar style (different brand) unit that stopped working. I've also bought another to fit to a third door when I get around to it - I bought the same brand to ensure the remote will work for all 3 though.

One thing I don't like about it though is the buttons on the keyfob remote. They are a bit easily pressed and I've opened/closed the garage a few times just by having my keys in a pocket.

    • Thanks mate. Bunnings have the Chamberlain range. I just google the Merlin MR850EVO and it is $799'ish…is this the price you pay?

      • Merlin and Chamberlain are made by the same company. I think Chamberlain is the DIY version, while Merlin needs to be professionally installed for the 7 year warranty to be valid (based on my phone conversation with their customer service staff).

I bought mine from remote openers (and had them to do the install as well)

They had the best price around when I looked.

      • I got mine off eBay. $379 for one, or a bit cheaper to buy two at once. If you are handy, and take precautions with the roller door preload, then installation is pretty simple.

Edit: can't remember exactly why I got the 850 and not the 650, but in the end I got the 850.

        • Thanks buddy. I ended up going to bunning to buy the chamberlain deluxe. Cost $347 prolly not as good a quality as the merlin one u bought but we want the roller door fixed asap so decided to just settle for the bunning one.
