Damaged prescription glasses by shop

Hi all,

Need some help regarding the damage on my prescription glasses.

Glasses value $240. Sent in for replacement due to one lens getting a fault so was sent in for warranty replacement.

Received it back and noticed that one lens that was not replaced under warranty has scratches on the inside, which were not scratched before it was shipped back for warranty.

Went back to the place that replaced the lense and came back stating damage was not done by them and by normal wear and tear… I look after my glasses with not a chip in the metal frame…

The replaced lens is fine, only the original lens has scratches now and fine marks on the centre inside…

They won't budge and want me to pay for the New lens if I go ahead to replace it.

Any info would be great :)

  • I don't know anything about it but won't it come down to your word vs. the shop's?

  • the original lens has scratches now and fine marks on the centre insideā€¦

You won't notice them after a few hours or days. If you do have them replaced at different shop.

  • Google: "how to remove scratches on eye glasses", many hits.

  • +1

go online and buy yourself a $20 pair of glasses - lots of places doing it now. you'll be much happier. get a new pair every 2 months, instead of trying to repair old ones.

    • You can also post the frames you like to some of the off-shore online places and they will put new lenses in, if you especially love the frames. That said, you would have the same risk of damage, but at least it is cheap!

      • Also try costco - their lenses are among the cheapest available in Australia and you wont have to wait several weeks for the post.

    • So glasses are like disposeable nappies now.

      • Contact lenses have been that way for several years … no reason regular glasses shouldn't follow the same route.

I would use the drinking glasses (pun intended) analogy instead of diapers. Most people buy a dozen drinking glasses for a few dollars and throw them away when they break, instead of trying to repair them when they break.

  • i wont be going back there again thats for sure… will not be taking family there either anymore :(

Store manager insinuated im after a free repair… !@#$%^ pissed off!

  • Lots of assumptions being made about the cost of lenses here.
Basic lenses are dirt cheap from specsavers.
Add high index plastic = more $$
    Add multifocals = more $$
    Add polarising = more $$

Getting glasses offshore can be challenging, depending on the strength of your prescription.
You MAY need to work out the centre of the lens in the frame, else your vision can be poor.

If the scratch is the centre of the lense - it will always be annoying.

If you have an issue with the lenses go to the healthcare ombudsman if the shop won't resolve it.

Regardless of the cost of the lens, you can almost certainly find it cheaper online than a retail store. For a basic lens you might not bother going online, since the saving is only a few dollars.

Glasses shops on the internet aren't a new invention, they've been around for years - they have all sorts of replacement warranties, if you're unhappy with the product.

Of course, it might take time to rectify a problem, but the cost saving should make it worth while.

Fair Trading in your local state can help too … but its probably not worth anyone's time if you can fix the problem for a few dollars via on online shop.

  • Thanks guys for the info. Shop finally agreed to fix the glasses :)
