  • Aldi was selling one for around $100, maybe there are some remainders.

Do you really want a CD player though? I play MP3s through the USB port on mine. Why not get a cheap car radio, maybe someone might even give you one, and get a FM transmitter to plug into your MP3 player?

    • @ greenpossum : I have a CD player/FM radio fitted in my car. However it can't play MP3's. Can you please elaborate your solution. So that I can play MP3s using the car radio. The CD player doesn't have any USB ports. How do I connect the MP3 player to the radio?

      • You get one of those FM transmitters that connects to your MP3 player's earphone socket. They are generally powered from the cigarette lighter socket. Then tune the car radio to the FM transmitter and voila, music. A quick search on the web shows that these gadgets are as cheap as $20. Some models are even a combo MP3 player and transmitter. And of course there are models that dock an iPod if you have one of those.

        Search keywords: mp3 fm transmitter

        • thanks for the details..

        • Hi greenpossum,

Thanks v much for the clear explanation. For non technos like myself it was great help

  • With many new cars coming with CD/MP3 players, and given the age of your car, have you thought about ebay secondhand units. Should be relatively cheap if you can fit it yourself.

If not check out JB hifi they can fit as well.

But if you are a little handy its not too hard to fit, you can often find radio wiring diagrams using google, and just match those to the player you buy.

Now the kids have moved up with their cars, we still have one in the garage, and I reckon many others are in the same boat, so its gotta be cheap.

  • I may have a spare CD player lying around. But if you have a casette tape why not use one of these

And connect it to your iPod. Firstly you don't need to burn CDs, secondly it's cheaper (5 bucks online).

    • Hi Kranbone,

Yes I have a cassette player in the car. looking at this too. I was looking at the FM transmitters but I find that that if I have to connect anything to the cigarette lighter socket it fuses v quickly. I cant even use the gps reliably as i cant charge it well .

My mechanic said that these cars were not made to have gps units etc so the fuse in the cigarette lighter goes off all the time.

      • The FM transmitter would need a connection to your cigarette lighter/socket I believe. The one I mentioned does not. You place that cassette into your cassette deck and there is a cord with a 3.5mm jack that will plug into your audio player (basically the headphone jack).

You are basically transmitting songs from your music player through the headphone jack into the cassette deck and out the speakers.

      • For postage I'll send you one of my Cassette thingy's. There are two or more sitting around, and its just taking up space, dont like throwing it out, but to go to someone who may be able to use it….

PM me if you want it

        • Oh oh I need one. Post one my way. Can you just test one for me and give me the one that gives the best possible sound. Please??

  • Hey Raz,

For a fairly cheap CD player that will also play MP3/WMA discs, and has an AUX input (to connect your mp3 player via), I'd look at the JVC KD-R316. It retails for $150 but is in the SuperCheap Auto catalogue at the moment for $114.

The model below it for $88 is near identical but it won't play MP3/WMA discs.

There are also a couple of similar inexpensive options from Sony in the same catalogue if you prefer.

    Hope this helps. :-)
