          that's gender discrimination

          man

          noun, plural: men
          2. a member of the species Homo sapiens or all the members of this species collectively, without regard to sex
          3. the human individual as representing the species, without reference to sex; the human race; humankind
          4. a human being; person

verb (used with object), manned, manning
          21. to furnish with men, as for service or defense.
          22. to take one's place for service, as at a gun or post

@Scrooge McDuck: in the context of the expression it applies to one sex. I've never heard a woman being told to "man up".

        • @try2bhelpful:

in the context of the expression it applies to one sex.

To me it means: "23. to strengthen, fortify, or brace; steel"

I've never heard a woman being told to "man up".

          Therein lies the sexism.

        • +1

@Scrooge McDuck: yup, see your point.

    • A mound of thermal clothes and then layer them,
    • Ugg boots for wearing around the house, or very thick socks.
    • Memory foam bathmats for standing in the kitchen when preparing food - warm and easy on the feet.
    • Blankets to put over you when watching TV - particularly the mink blankets
    • Pyjamas to wear to bed
    • Good quality doona to keep you warm
    • Flannalette sheets for the bed
    • Heavy drapes for the windows
    • rugs for the wooden floors, particularly around the couches.
    • Shutoff areas you aren't using to keep the heat in.
    • Open the doors again just before you go to bed to enable the bedrooms to get warmer.
    • Get a cat - not thernally efficient but the little beggars throw out a lot of heat.
    • Get one of the down jackets, the light ones work well as long as you have thermals underneath and they fold up to a small footprint for carrying.

Thank you for some cost effective ideas to beat the cold. The only person so far who has anything useful to offer for the OP's question …..

  • +1

Having a partner to spoon in bed really helps. But seriously turn your heating on that's what most people do in winter…

  • +3

Assuming you want to supplement the good ideas for insulating/rugging up with some actual heating, the most cost effective is an electric blanket or electric throw rug.
These cost a tenth of the cost of a fan heater to operate.
If you must heat a whole room, reverse cycle aircon with a high COP is the most affordable to run.
And a hot drink or soup is also very effective.

waaay too serious of an answer there.

but yep bedding warmer much better than space heating

      • But not as cheap as making a camp fire in your living room.

        • depends on what you burn, and what gets damaged…..

        • +2

          @sandp:

waaay too serious of an answer there

    • Wouldn't most cost effective would be various hot water bottles strapped onto different parts of the body, then covered in thick animal fur clothes to insulate the resulting heat?

Add additional storeys on your house so you are closer to the sun.

I think once you get beyond the atmosphere i reckon it should get close to 100 degrees during the day in the sunlight, so maybe 2/3rds of the way up?

Which is 8km, so you would only need to add about 2700-3000 storeys.

    • Actually, you want to go the other way - generally temperature increases 25C for every 1 Km down from the surface. As you go up the temperature decreases.

      • In the vacuum of space, sure, but not in your 3000 storey sealed house that's directly heated up by the sun without any pesky atmosphere.

        • sounds like the basis of a decent science fiction book based on massive overcrowding on the earth. Maybe I can then get my, damned, flying car they keep promisiing me.

Buy a steamer wetsuit and wear it 24/7 like I do.

  • +3

I like how you titled an Australian winter as bitter. Have you been to North America or Europe? lmao at worst you need a thin coat and pants for an Aussie winter

    • +4

I feel like inside buildings is much colder here than in Europe because it isn't as cold outside, so the buildings aren't heated. I feel much colder here than I ever did when I lived in Austria.

  • +4

    Flame people on the internet?

  • +7

Came here expecting advice on home brewing. Bitterly disappointed.

    • +1

      Good idea!

      Fermentation is an exothermic process.

  • Light a scented candle for 15 mins. Makes the house smell nice too and warms up the room. Just keep an eye on it for as long as it is on.

  • +1

Hot water bottles under the sheets 10 minutes before hopping in is amazing.

we use to use room heater, but last winter all we have used was 2 hot water bottles.

make sure you get ones with a cover on them, it makes them nicer to touch rather than the yukky rubber,

  • Doesn't suit everyone, but a slow combustion wood heater is the best 'whole house' heating option for me. Requires a little bit of work (splitting, stacking firewood etc), but I just consider that money saved on gym membership ;-)

I can usually get at least some (sometimes all) of my firewood for free. Even if I buy it, I tend to stick to hardwood off-cuts from a sawmill. Total cost to heat the family home over winter is usually about $250-$300.

Great for drying clothes too- can hand out a couple of loads of clothes after dinner and they'll be dry by morning. House looks like a laundromat, but I don't care.

Other than that, just rug up and use electric blankets if you have to.
