Return to Mainland China permit (Home Return Permit) for Hong Kong Permanent Residents

Looking at travelling China some time in late June, and am aware of the existence of a "Return to Mainland China permit" which is for certain eligible HK residents. Wikipedia article here.

I am aware that it's probably only a small subset of Ozbargain users that will be able to advise on this, so I don't expect to get too many responses.

In terms of eligibility, I believe I am eligible. I hold a HK permanent ID with 3 stars which I believe is the main criteria to be eligible.

I'd like to be able to do this without going to Hong Kong, but I have a feeling that this may not be possible.

Is anyone able to provide some advice/insight? Does anyone know the cost? It's pretty hard to find information about it online..

  • All this talk of HK ID reminded me to go apply for my Macau ID…

  • So I just got back from a trip to Hong Kong & CTS. I don't have too much more to add. You do indeed need a HKSAR passport. However, what I noticed was he only seemed to say I needed that because I wasn't born in Hong Kong. It appears those who are born in Hong Kong have it a bit easier. Based on questions I was asked, it also appears that the process differs between renewing and obtaining it for the first time, which supports a lot of the comments here too.

Other than the HK passport requirements, I fulfil the other requirements.

In terms of providing proof of residency in Hong Kong (i.e. not someone simply coming for a stopover/holiday to obtain the permit), I did not get to that stage, but it is of course possible that this may have been asked for me in one of the subsequent steps. I would've also of course failed at this stage LOL.

I probably will not pursue this anymore as it appears to be more effort than it's worth, but it's also good to know that the rules are constantly changing, so maybe an opportunity will come up some time in the future.
