Fair First Offer on a New i30

Hi All

Wondering what your recommended first offer would be when intending to buy a new Hyundai i30 (2016 or 2017, MY17).

Prices I can locate are:

I would like to negotiate for genuine floor and dash mats, and possibly window tinting. Also intend to pay on Credit Card (points generation) but not mention this until final stages of negotiation.

Wanting to start the negotiation low enough to get a good price, but high enough to not get laughed at. Gut feel says to start at $18k. What do you think?

Edit: went in at 19k plus the extras above, and was flat out rejected - dealer would not budge below 20 flat. we also found out that the cars that they have were purchased in bulk following a storm incident. Dealer would not even take my number for in case he changed his mind.

  • I'd go 18k firm WITH floor mats and tint. Be prepared to sign leave a deposit that day.

Also be prepared to be disappointed with the credit card. I've heard of people paying the $1000 deposit on credit, but the dealer not allowing credit for the rest. (This is word of mouth, not personal experience - Happy to be proved wrong)

Nah you're right. Certainly not on ~$18k = $180 fee

  • An OzBargainer got one for $18k, plus a $1k gift card, plus accessories: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/285266

May have been a manual transmission model?

    You are after an Auto?

May or may not be achievable, it all depends if you can find a dealer that is prepared to eat into some of their margins.

My preferred dealer has 2016 for $19,950 driveaway; or 2017 for $19,999 plus stamp duty and transfer fees.

Are you in a position to wait 6 to 9 months to purchase a new car?
Personally I would wait to the new model levels out in price and Hyundai starts throwing money at the dealers to keep pushing them out the door as the intial rush that comes with a new model resides.
The new model is leaps and bounds on the outgoing model (the old model is now 5 years old).

    • Not in a position to wait unfortunately. Finding very little margin (2k) between brand new and recently new, perhaps due to the fact a new model is due.

I see the 1k gift card as the start of Hyundai's dealer motivation.

      Yes going for auto.

Yes, a combination of a sharp reduced price point and supply and demand for used vehicles.
Worth noting, the out going i30 resale value will start to come back, especially as used rental cars start to hit the market.
Having said that you have purchased at a reduced price point which will go some ways towards offsetting the drop in resale.

Realistically you are just going to have to sound out the market and pull the trigger on the best deal you can get (a combination of year model, your desired color/s, distance to travel, not just the lowest purchase price).

Is there any value for you in the Active X model?

        • Not really, Mrs Excel is happy with the base model features. Investigations into the Active X is their listed price is about 2k more, and the alloy wheels and shiny bits aren't 2k worth of appeal for us.

  • Also intend to pay on Credit Card (points generation) but not mention this until final stages of negotiation.

Won't matter, 99.9% will just tell you to get a bank cheque. You can't just decide to pay by credit card and not cop the surcharge (which is at least 1%)

Just pay by EFT or get a bank cheque.

    • Would the dealer cop the surcharge as a part of negotiating?

      • Doubt it. Only if they have more margin left to negotiate on… Think about it, any extra you add to the negotiation is just money off the car. They will hit a certain limit and not have anywhere else to go.

The new model i30 starts selling very soon. Second quarter 2017 from memory so any day now. They will be desperate to get rid of the old model then. Much cheaper than the prices you mention. You mention 2016 cars so you must be happy to go with the old model.

  • They will never be able to get you tint cheaply. Their typical markup is 300% or something silly. And if you have issues, the "lifetime warranty" will be a hassle.
Just get it done at a local shop for ~$300, so that at least you know what type of tint you are getting.
Personally, I stay away from all the "dealer extra's".

I bought a bottom-model i30 in 2011 for $18k, floors mats included. Not a great price, but ok. Be careful not to get screwed on things like registration (mine was supposed to have 12 months, but because it was a negotiated price they only gave me 6).

Do a comparison on Google Reviews for different dealerships. My recent experience in buying a (different brand) car showed that the dealerships with bad reviews were not worth walking into. The Maddington branch is not doing very well. Mine came from DVG Melville, and each time I told them to please fix the squealing clutch they claimed not to be able to reproduce it (from 1yr/10,000km, until the warranty expired).

  • Oh, by the way:

Wanting to start the negotiation low enough to get a good price, but high enough to not get laughed at.

Be careful; they will never just accept your first bid, even if it is fair. Start very low. They may laugh at you, even if the price is reasonable. You may have to get multiple quotes. Some dealerships apply all kind of sales tactics, not all of which are "fair", "reasonable" or even "legal". During my last experience (Feb), the first sales guy spent 45 minutes negotiating, pretended to cave in at the price we wanted, and wrote up the whole offer, only for the sales manager to tell us "sorry guys, can't do it", starting negotiation at square one. Be willing to walk (we did), and be careful of the "wearing you down" game, and emotional pressure/guilt tactics.
    Before signing, confirm:

    • How many months of registration are you getting?
    • Is the price truly drive-away?
    • Availability. The dealer I mentioned above lied to us about availability (another dealer proved it to us - they can see one another's car availability, and can ask the national corporate office about 'hidden' cars reserved for other dealers). You don't want to wait for 3 months, but may be obliged to once you sign.
    • Full tank of fuel. My i30 came with enough fumes to get me to the petrol station, no more.
    • Thank you. Very good points.

  • I'm on the same boat as well.

Budget is 20k, can't max out cause i'm want to claim tax ( sole trader), so probably the new i30 is out of reach.

on facebook of caradvice show some new i30 running around Au, probably the price for the new one will release soon.

Hopefully the old model will drop soon. Plan to get the i30 active X + sunroof :D not sure achievable for 20k or not

ps: Mazda 3 maxx it not a bad choice, any advice?

    • Our other car is a Mazda 3 Maxx hatch. Love it.

  • I would be waiting for the new model. Overseas reviews reviews put it way ahead of the current model. This will mean much bigger depreciation for the current model and you miss out on a better car.

Unless of course you get a super deal to offset this loss.

    • It's all about timing unfortunately. Mrs excel needs a new car for work, inside of 3 weeks.

    Pay with credit card?
You just lost a heap of cash discount!

    • Wait, there's a discount for cash? Why would we do that when there's zero extra profit in a cash deal?

  • Just went from Ryde Hyundai today,

The sale guys told me that the new model gonna be around 22.5k and expect to arrive end of the month.

    • Definitely wouldn't want to be paying 20 for the old model then. Glad you managed to find someone straight-talking. We might wait another week before trying again with some dealers.
