Need a Numpad Phone for Grandparents! What Is There in a Day/Age of Touchscreens?

Hi,

I'm looking for a phone which isn't touchscreen, and has a numpad. There aren't so many options nowadays as all I see are the cheapo touchscreens.

Ideally, it has the following features:

Large icons/screen text
Multilanguage support
Large(ish) buttons to reduce the likelihood of fatfingering

No internet access required
Can be flip phone styled.

Is it worth waiting for say the new Nokias?

Thanks a lot in advance.

  • Coles has a rugged candybar for $49 in the current catalog.
Most weeks, it seems, there is a candybar phone for under $30.
If you can't wait, try Auspost. They have 3 candy bar handsets in the current catalog from $29. There is a $129 model with large numbers aimed at seniors.

The new Nokias are smart phines, and will likely be too complex for your needs. You just want a feature phone.

    • The large numbers in the $129 model looks smaller than the $99 flip phone in the current catalogue. Also, it looks exactly the same as the konka u3, prob same manufacturer different brand.

I wish there were more options for this (with 3G). Many of the feature phones have tiny buttons, and we really want something more like a cordless home phone. My grandpa has one of these cheap phones, and managed to get some kind of virus on it that spammed his family. I don't know how, he seems to attract that kind of thing.

      Porn

      • Given he can barely read a number on the tiny screen… seems unlikely. He's got a desktop computer, a laptop, and an iPad. In this case, not going to be porn.

    • Less features = less ways to get viruses but how did he manage that?

      • I imagine he got the same SMS we got from him "Congratulations you've won a $100 Coles voucher!" and then he pressed a button.

      Definitely porno.

  • Nokia 6500 Slide is like $60 refurbed

The new Nokia 3310 will only have 2G, lots of Aussie mobile service operators have turned off or will soon turn off their 2G service.

A pity, as Ms Rover would have liked a phone with a number pad but also did emails and her provider has shut off (or will very soon) the 2G.

The Aspera big buttoned flip phone might meet your listed needs.

What language support is required, the Aspera has English, Spanish and Chinese?

    • Chinese. Might look into the Aspera f24.
      Thanks

  • Just get a new Android phone and use any of the following launchers,
    https://play.google.com/store/search?q=elderly%20launcher&c=…
Most of them are design for elderly.

  • buy a cheap smart phone download nova app and customize screen and app size to suite. I've already done it with my grand the only prob I had teaching him was swipping to answer phone.

    • Idk why but he seemed strongly against touch screens. It would be a good option though.

  • Konka U3 from Big W? $94.00 and looks fairly good.
Recently bought the Telstra T20 phone for my father in law so that's an option as well.

    • Looks good from reviews. Will have to get to know more about the Konka U3 but apparently it ticks all the boxes I have.
      Thanks

  • We got this for one of our grandparents, works well on any network and is pretty easy to use.
Comes with the SOS button on the back as well if you're wanting them to have it for safety reasons.

EDIT: Sorry, didn't see the multilanguage support, not sure what this one supports as haven't had to change to another language.

tried this? my 85 year old dad can use it.. I don't think there is multi language support tho sorry.

  • Had this exact dilemma a few weeks ago with my 91 year old grandpa.

Ended up getting an Alcatel from Officeworks although they were $14.50 when we got one. They are back up to $25 now.

He had a Virgin (Optus) SIM already which worked perfectly in the Optus locked phone.

  • I bought the Aspera F24 3G flip phone from Mobileciti for my Mother In Law when the Telstra 2G network was shut down. It is only $93 and looks pretty scmick with its gold and leather finish.

So far so good. She can read the screen and the buttons are large and clear. She has even had to use the emergency button feature when she had a fall and couldn't get up.

  • As billy3000 mentioned KISA Phone ( www.kisa.com.au ) might be an option, it has no screen but also no keypad.

It can have maximum of 10 contacts and each contact can be displayed in any language.

New Nokia 3310 (https://www.nokia.com/en_int/phones/nokia-3310) is GSM only (2G) and will work on Vodafone network up until September 2017 but will stop working after all of GSM (2G) is decommissioned in Australia.

Olitech (www.olitech.com.au) is a good option if the person you are getting it for can navigate menus.
