Laptop about 17.3 Inch for Desktop Replacement

I'm looking for advice please. I'm getting rid of my desktop as its quite old. I'm thinking that a laptop would be a good way to go ( and my kids said only dinosaurs like me would consider a desktop for the work I do). I'm not into gaming just using it for spreadsheets, internet, office etc. So probably want 8gb Ram 1TB hd i5 or i7.Need a big screen and wont be transporting it a lot eg no flights, just moving it about the house on wifi. Not that age is a factor but on the wrong side of 60 and terms like overclocking seem to mean what you do when daylight savings start to the clock on the wall! Hoping to spend about $1500 mark but a bit flexible. Any good specials, deals out there at he moment. Thanks in advance.

  • There's a pretty good deal on a Dell 17" laptop at the moment, for $979

If you are happy not moving your current PC around, are you sure you need a laptop?
They are more expensive, slower, break more often and have a shorter usable life. Plus next one you buy you are re-buying a screen, keyboard etc.
If you already have an OK screen then you can probably pick up a pretty good desktop PC for $600-800ish.
8GB ram and an i5 will do you fine. If you can get one with a SSD that will make more noticeable difference to you than a more powerful processor.

    • Im with fenric on this one. If you don't need a laptop, don't buy a laptop.

As an example, I built a new PC for a friend over the weekend (similar situation and usage to yourself). It was a Dell Dimension 5100 he had been using since 2005. Reused the same monitor, SSD (add the to the existing machine about 18 months ago) and KB+M.

Spent ~$780 with Ebay 20% off and future proofed the crap out of it for him (the same 12 year usage he got out of the last one would be nice):

      i5-7500 - $329
      Thermaltake Versa H25 case - $75
      Asus Prime H270 Plus Motherboard - $189
      Thermaltake Toughpower 550W Gold PSU - $139
      16GB 2400MHz DDR4 - $205
      Sata DVD-ROM - $30
