Opal Sunday $2.50 Capped Fares

Can a Sydney sider please advise if the Sunday $2.50 fare is available as a once off Opal single ticket purchase or do you need an Opal card ($10 min deposit) to take advantage of the $2.50 cap?

I will be in Sydney on Sunday only and Opal website and $2.50 deal post here isn't 100% clear.

    Opal card benefits

The more you travel with an Opal card the more you can benefit. And these benefits affect how your fare is calculated. For example, if you’ve reached your Weekly Travel Cap, your fares for the rest of the week are half-price.

You can’t earn Opal card benefits with an Opal single trip ticket, because these tickets are single-use only. Find out more about Opal card benefits.

Ok thanks. I think I get it now. They are single USE tickets so looks like Sunday $2.50 capped fares don't apply. Guess I will need to buy an Opal card after all.

  • A single is for a single trip as the name suggests. So there are no benefits.

From 1 January 2016, Family Funday Sunday tickets are no longer sold. However, if you have an Opal card, you can still enjoy unlimited travel all day Sunday for $2.50 per person – with or without a family.
Single tickets for a single day probably cost more than the $10 minimum on the Opal card and you can keep the card for use next time you are in Sydney.
If you have relatives in Sydney you can transfer the balance to their Opal card.
There is always an additional cost for going through the gate at the airport stations.
