OpenOffice Calc - Drag down without Counting up?

Frustration has found me….
When dragging down a cell with a number in it, it will always count up the numbers up, so if I have '1' in the first cell when dragging down it will go, 2, 3, 4, etc. Is there a way to stop this? I just want to copy the contents of the cell down to other cells. Much appreciated. Thought I should ask before I destroy this rather expensive laptop….

Can't you just use Control - C to copy the cell and Control V to paste it?

    • Yes but dragging is MUCH faster!

I have an older version of OO installed, and it has far less features than Excel (which allows you to define how the drag feature works). The only way I have done it in the past is to put the same number in 2 stacked cells, select both of them, then drag down. e.g. A1=1, A2=1. highlight both, drag down. I think by default it tries to analyze the difference in the cells, then continues the series by incrementing by that amount. However if the cells are the same, it continue the series by adding the difference ("0"). This results in them being identical.

this. same default as excel I believe.

    • It works! Great work around, thanks will save me much time :)

      • Also try holding the 'ALt' key instead of 'Ctrl'. It works as you want in MS Excel, hopefully in OO too.

    other options:
    1) hold ctrl when dragging down
    2) drag down (creates sequence) then CTRL-D to copy value in first cell into the range

Option 1 (holding ctrl) didn't work on the older version of OO I had installed, but it did work in the latest version. This would be the preferred (laziest :) ) method if it works in your program.

What happens when you type '1' in two cells, select both and drag down?

Microsoft Excel is an alternative that works.

You may also be interested to know (if you didn't already) that the OO.org project is essentially on life support and you should switch to LibreOffice which is a continuation of the old OO.org codebase. It's made significant progress since they split a few years ago.

    • Oh, no shit?

Thanks, I'd best update… it's been way too long since I've even looked at OO.

      Cheers!
