Toshiba HD DVD Player for as Low AS $300 to $600 + 6 to 11 HD DVD titles

101

Toshiba have a huge price drop on there HD-DVD players, starting from $300, and there dearest model at $599 which used to retail for $1599. The redemption offer of bonus HD-DVDs is to promote the sales of the HD DVD format, I guess trying to win over blu-ray. The players are so cheap now it's ridiculous.

The dearest model has the best technology out there to upscale the standard DVDs to 1080p for HD viewing, this type of technology used to come in players over $6000, so it's best player to play your DVDs, and a really cheap price.

  • Hmm, all the tech blogs are talking of the imminent death of HD-DVD… Blu-Ray is killing HD-DVD in the number of players sold (mostly PS3's) AND more importantly the support of studio's releasing content on HD-DVD or Blu-Ray…
Be warned that you could be buying into a dying technology by purchasing an HD-DVD player… similar to buying a Beta Video player rather than a VHS unit in the 80's…

    • anyone who buys a blu-ray player now is silly, cause sony is updating the format, and the older players will be obsolete only the PS3 will be compatible with the new update, when they update the firmware. My advice is to wait on blu-ray. Who know's who's going to win? More studios definitely are producing blu-ray over HD DVD. But dont buy a blu-ray player just yet. If you're that keen person to get both, then this is a good option.

      • Stop the scare tactics. The blu-ray consortium (and it is this lot that can change the blu-ray format, not Sony on its own) is not going to create some new standard which is incompatible with current blu-ray players and which will alienate their own market. This HD-DVD special is okay but that is mostly because it offers a cheap dvd upscaler to the masses.

        • Funny that you say that cause sony already have done that. The older players cannot play the new layer imbedded in the new format. If you are getting a blu-ray player get a PS3, it is the safest way, as blu-ray format is still unstable and has not been perfected, it can change and you'll have troubles. here's an article on it for any interests of people who are making a purchase.

  • It certainly does look like blu-ray is going to dominate, and yes, you MAY be buying into a 'dying' technology… but that doesn't stop this being a good deal. Even buying BR now isn't a sure thing, can't vote negative to all HD deals just because there are competing technologies on the line :)

  • The HD-XE1 is great value at $599 (can be easily got for $550 or less). Not only is it the best DVD upscaler currently on the market (using the high end Reon-Vx HQV video processing chip only found on $2,000 DVD players, like the Denon 2930), you also get 11 free HD DVD movies (1 in the box, 10 by redemption). The other HD DVD players might be cheaper, but the XE1 is still the best value.

Don't believe me? Just visit DTV Forum Australia and check out all the happy XE1 users. Those worried about the player being locked to DVD region 4 should also have a look at the forum, you might find something special there to help solve your problem:

  • Negative for dying technology? Surely, you could say the same for the DVD? a CRT monitor or TV? Still a good deal.

  • both formats were not on my buying list but that Xe1 is very tempting with the new price, anyone know what you can haggle one for ?

  • about $500-$520.. Both HD formats sales are still in no way close to DVD sales, so this HD format war (if you can call it that) will drag on for a while.

The PS3 is the only player that does 1.2 (iirc), and profile 2.0 is still a paper spec. There's no guarantee that current blu-ray players will be upgraded - but at the most you'd probably only lose the special features.

Still, i'd prefer HD DVD anyday, and at that price, the HD-XE1 is a fantastic DVD player!

Wish I can buy one, but my LCD isn't HDCP compliant.. :( :( :(

  • cuase its not HDCP compliant dosent that mean you just run it through your component connection and get close to HD picture ?
