Need Advice: Buying a Refrigerator and Washing Machine. What Are The OzBargain Standard Chocices? Brand New or Used?

If I get a brand new will consider moving it the next time. With used not so much. First time buying, not sure what parameters to consider.

  • first fridge & washing machine, get second hand

  • Fridges are very reliable, a used fridge would be fine. I would buy a brand new washing machine though.

Size is the main factor for both, I think. Make sure you get something that's big enough for what you need to use it for. Try an online retailer if you live in a metro area as they might be cheaper even factoring in the delivery

    • i would avoid samsung fridges, they looks great and are priced well but mine had frosting issues just after the warranty had expired and needed some parts replaced.

      • That is useful indeed thanks.

I actually really rate my samsung fridge, really like it and has worked perfectly for the 5+ years we have had it

        • same here, i really like it. But after 5-6 years, it were the issues start to arise.

But i believe its a design fault, that they never resolved. I actually had 2 srs626hmwss, (one for myself and old folks). The issue is that causes the cooling freeze to complely stop working as the fridge isn't able to clear out the build up of ice inside the fridge.
you can read about it more here:

Also with Samsung fridges, you are not allowed to take them on airplanes

        • Items already banned on some airlines include electronic tablets, phones, hoverboards, cutlery, any container that holds liquid, nail files, scissors, nail clippers, too much cash, items that can be used as weapons (drumsticks, guitars, flutes, anything really), power tools and hand tools, matches, medications, deodorant, tent pegs, badminton raquets, fishing rods, batteries for wheelchairs, spiked rings or necklaces, gas-powered curling irons, ink/toner cartridges.

It won't be long before you're not allowed to take passengers on aircraft…

        • Damm. I was planning on taking mine with me on my next holiday to Fiji

Actually I've had a Samsung fridge for 16 years now, still going strong

        • Then and now 2 different stories. same with all appliances

My Samsung fridge still going strong after 7.5 years. Price matched with a receipt uploaded from a fellow ozbargainer for a fraction above cost price.

Brand new from Appliances Online ebay store, paid using Coles card, don't forget CashRewards.

    • Why Coles card (does it have no interest for long period)? And you do mean after we get a 20% off ebay or something right?

      • Coles card gives you price protection for 2 years, so you can buy it without fearing for the price to drop.

  • Well used usually makes more sense if you're a tightwad.

That said I wonder how much the steaming turd that is the electricity market which delivers us the highest prices on the globe affects this now - would older fridges actually be more expensive considering energy bills?

Never trust politicians again. Never listen to them again only judge by actions.

      Tightwad is the best wad
It makes sense to buy used considering there's not been any major real developments in refrigeration, and the ones that have (ice maker, filtered water, tv screen) all reduce the efficiency of the unit

There's dozens of fridges on Gumtree. I bought one for $60 5 years ago and it's still running, although it needs the occasional servicing (defrosting, cleaning) which I do on my own.

Yeah there are a few good options there. How to do you usually get the fridge to your place without too much hassle? Maybe $50 in airtasker?

      • +1

Since we moved altogether, I just hired a trailer from 7/11. But yea, airtasker can be a good option if you don't have a mate with a ute. I never used it though.

      • Thats why I drive a station wagon. SUVs are good for this too. Fewer people driving small sedans now. maybe ask a friend or rel to help out.

Depends on how much you value appearance
If you can do without a delux french door with glossy metallic finish and icemaker with 10 different settings, go used. It won't use all that more electricity, but still its worth getting a power meter for $20 and checking that

My fridge consumes about 2KW of power a day, roughly 50c worth. So each year it costs $150 in electricity.

  • I would buy new for both however this depends on your financial situation. That way you will have warranties and hopefully years of worry free use. I can recommend this fridge - comes with a 5 year manufacturer warranty. Most other brands have 1 or 2 years: https://www.binglee.com.au/mitsubishi-420l-stainless-steel-t…

    • You gotta be kidding. For $800 you can buy about 10 fridges second hand that will probably outlast this one.

Seconds World for both - good starting point. Pretty decent at times - but you may find better deals elsewhere.

Would buy both first-hand if you can afford - otherwise, compromise on the fridge - it's only food stuff. With washing machines - more concern about what's gone into them for washing from a hygiene perspective. Again, personal really but otherwise, happy hunting.

Regardless of how cheap they are, never buy any whitegoods from Aldi.

They are almost guaranteed to fail at the warranty expiry of two years. Labour costs mean that any attempt to repair Aldi whitegoods is doomed to failure. Even if they replace multiple units prior to warranty expiry, the warranty period doesn't reset. Eventually you'll be left in limbo with a unit not designed to last.

    USED - gumtree or ebay.

bought my microwave (LG stainless steel 27 litre) from ebay 5 years ago for 99cents and still going strong.

    • 99 cents lol

      • yep, 99 cents.

even freecycle. - I scored a 10 year old Bosch front loader which needed a new belt ($15 from ebay). Gave it a damn good clean -cleaned the seal and interior, sanded back some some surface rust near the base and sprayed some enamel gloss white paint- looked excellent when finished. Gave it to a friend who needed a new washer.

Freecycle is decent I agree especially for furniture. It's people who have taken care of their stuff and just wanna make sure it is utilized. Will have a look thanks!

  • You will get some very good fridges and washers for $60 to $100 and even free on Gumtree. They will last much longer too. Everything new is made in China now with a very limited lifespan. If the "used" fridge or washing machine breaks down often the parts are cheap and its easy to repair. If not just go and buy another for $60-$100

  • Used, from your local Facebook Buy Swap group. So even offer deliveries.

  • Just bought an Esatto 400L fridge for $530. Will report back on it when it arrives in May. Agree - get a new washing machine - recommend cheapest new chinese brand.

    • That is quite a good price for 400L I reckon. can you give link? Maybe an ebay one to use 5% off.

EDIT: NVM. Found it on Appliance Online http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-Esatto-RTM400W-400L-Top-Mount…

      • Yeah it6's a pre-sale - won't get it until May 17 though. But worth the wait (come on stupid Haier fridge - hold on until May!!!)

  • We have bought second hand fridges from areas like Toorak/Brighton in Melbourne. They replace their fridges so often when there's nothing wrong with them they just want a new one, too much cash! On two occasions when we needed a replacement fridge we did this and got them for under $100 and then sold them for more money when we needed to change our fridge for space reasons when moving to a new rental house.
