Need a YouTube/Web/Email Laptop for The Parents $500 or Less. SSD & Maybe 8GB Ram for The 119 Tabs They Forget to Close

So they have a 5 year old laptop that they claim is too slow.
But they only use it for youtube and email mostly, and every time I try it out it seems to run fine. It just needs an SSD.
But I think they just want something new and shiny.
So might as well just give in and hopefully keep them happy for another 5 years.

Any recommendations?

    I don't understand.

OzB is one TAB, why would you ever need anything more? lol

if its just the web they're using, why not look into chromebooks? i know the specs are underperforming, but the Chrome OS is lightweight and "optimised" for just browsing and google apps. you can find some for under $500USD on amazon.

10% off on Dell laptops at the moment. This one is pretty decent config and RRPs for $599 shipped. You get $60 off on that one

    • Damn. This is almost perfect!
No SSD means this goes over the budget by $100

      • Get it for now. Later swap it into SSD. I don't think it is a deal breaker, especially for the usage you have mentioned

    • USA site

      • Damn. Sorry. My bad

  • change their browser settings to not cache web pages, close all tabs on exit, scheduled defrag and stuff

  • Wait for Dell Inspiron 11 3000 sale on eBay for $319.20.

Just upgrade the ram to 8gb.

    • Hmm, I wonder how this CPU compares to the one they have.
Maybe this is the go. Although they'd probably consider it a downgrade since the screen is 11" rather than the 15" they have now.

  • Maybe 8GB Ram for The 119 Tabs They Forget to Close

There are extensions (for Chrome at least) that allow you to set maximum tabs. I'd say other browsers allow this too. Recommend as it teaches them not to be lazy! I find they also never close office documents and just minimise and keep opening new ones. When their OS finally shits itself they can't work out why computers hate them so much. I now understand the "have you tried turning it off and back on again?" whereas in the past I didn't even consider that someone could be that inept.

  • Dell factory outlet. I don't think the 1366x768 resolution will be an issue? There are some 15.6" Inspirons that fit the bill, except for the SSD. You can always upgrade that later.

  • How did you go, OP? find anything good? I am in the exact same boat.
Graysonline is having a 20% off sale at the moment.

    • No I haven't.
There are so many different models with different CPUs, it's hard to figure out what's the best value.
I think I might just throw in the towel and get an SSD for them.

      • Yeah, I know what you mean.
        Thanks for the reply.
I think for my own Mother I am just going to with something cheap - she is far from the power user.
        Good luck.
