Decent BBQ

Hi Folks,

I'm after a BBQ and am struggling to find something suitable. I'm after a few requirements:
- A square/rectangle shape (I don't like the round/oval shapes)
- Preferably a cabinet underneath even if it just fits the gas bottle
- A hood
- Relatively small, I don't really need the side shelf things (though a wok burner could be useful)

The problem I am having is all BBQ's seem to be either really expensive ~$1500 or dirt cheap and rubbish (Jumbuck etc.) for like $100. Where's the middle ground?

The one I like the best, but is too expensive, is this one from BBQ's Galore

Any ideas? Where else should I be looking?

EDIT: Possibly a 3 burner

having had numerous BBQ's over the years, just like everyone else, i bought a Weber Q

not sure if you know, but you need to keep the lid down on these while cooking (radiant heat from the lid cooks all round, rather than just burning from underneath)

have a look at the "Family Q"

i WILL NEVER go back to a traditional BBQ

everything i cook now is wonderful, moist, juicy and so much better than my old cooking on a 'traditional BBQ'

regularly cook whole roast chickens and lamb joints, over a tray of water, low heat, over 3-4hrs ……… YUM (profanity) YUM

    :)

    • I've heard a lot of good things about them but somehow it just doesn't seem right for me - I'm a big fan of the old rectangle BBQ.

      • like the old saying "don't knock it til you try it" !

        your money though

      • He's right! I was the same as you until I used a friends at a BBQ. I bought a baby q the next day and oh what a love affair it has been. A bit of a learning curve for sure. But my dad even makes cakes and pavlovas in his…

I still haven't emptied a gas bottle this year and it gets a bloody workout - Can't really ask for more! Only downside is it's pretty exy for what it is. And then you find out how much the trolley costs…

Prepare for the Q to be the most frequently suggested - it will be - and in baby, regular or family guise you can't go wrong with the Q. There are so many designs around that seem to replicate the look/function of the Q… for a reason!

        Best of luck. :)

    • The tray of water just sits underneath?

yep, put the joint, in foil, on a wire tray above the water bath, top up as required

  • EDIT2 : Possibly a 4 burner

    EDIT3 : Possibly a 5 burner

    IKEA perhaps?

    http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/categories/departments/out…

Although I have no idea if they are any good. I would hope a quick google would assist?

My work mate bought the Charcoal version: http://www.ikea.com/au/en/catalog/products/S89048409/ and he is happy enough with it…

  • If you can build your own cabinet or get one 2nd hand off Gumtree this bbq is good

You can also get 'regular' rectangular Weber bbqs which are really good quality. They will last you forever if you take care of them.

  • Happy with my weber q…… Give it a shot even if its 'oval'. Cooks fine all over, so all good in that department!

  • love my Q too

I've got an old silver series Weber gas hooded BBQ. Weber are great and have a fantastic warranty.

My BBQ is more than 10 years old and I recently rang their support line about buying a new peizo starter button.

Not only did they send it out free they also sent out a new set of Caster wheels.

So don't just look at the Q series, look at the whole range.

    • Hey Wombledomble, have you bought anything from this place?

The prices seem too good to be true and they only take bank transfer as a form of payment. I can't see them on the Weber Australia list of Specialist Dealers, despite selling the Qx200 series, and I don't think they have an ABN.

So close to pulling the trigger on that Spirit E-310

      • I agree - very suss.

Not much info about them on the web. I also see them selling the Q1200 in a range of colours which don't seem to be available in Australia.

        • Confirmed scam with Weber - I've just reported the website.

  • Buy a second hand Weber trolley BBQ, not the Weber Q

  • Definitely the Q - love it! - cooked pancakes for breakfast the other day and also made some muffins after that. Not just for meat. So simple to use. Accessories get a bit pricey but you can always find a cheaper alternative.
