Warning - Jetstar's New Sporting Baggage Policy Sucks

Was just looking at flights to Melbourne and Christchurch. Last year I booked 20kg and took ski's,board and clothes. Bag number didn't matter, only weight.

Just went to rebook the same flight. Now need to book a minimum 15kg checked baggage at $17, plus a flat $25 for a snowboard per leg (and its weight is still part of your checked baggage). At least Tiger lets you book the board for the same $25, but it includes 20kg. So don't need to book checked bags on top.

So a simple cheap ski trip to Melbourne is now a minimum $25x2=$50 + $17x2=$34. So $84 before the fare is even considered.

If travelling on to Nz etc, double that.

I'm sure a few Nz / Bali travellers might be in for a surprise.

More reason not to fly Jetstar.

    • Who's ever needed a reason NOT to fly Jetstar?

Surely the thought just would not occur to anyone with half a brain.

Bali travellers might be in for a surprise.

if they didn't already know that there is no snow in Bali then…..

Ha, funny man. Previously jetstar would be your airline of choice if taking a surfboard to Bali.

The example above would be Worse for an international flight as you would be up for $64+ $25 before the flight price.

      • So it will cost a touch extra to import your dope now.

  • Thanks for the heads up.

It sucks even more for me. My mountain bike plus basic camping gear was around 30 kg, so Jetstar's previous system was perfect for me.

Tiger only allows up to 20 kg for sporting equipment so I wouldn't be able to stuff my bike box with "extras".

For domestic trips with sporting equipment from Sydney towards Melbourne or Brisbane the train prices start to look more attractive now ($12.10 extra for sporting equipment only). Though from the reviews on OzBargain it seems it's not worth it even for the "experience" or saving $50.

plus ten hours getting the worse back and rump massage of one's life. $50 is well worth it.

  • I am pretty sure you would be fine (at least in Melbourne).

If you have oversized luggage- you go to a separate generic non-Jetstar point to drop it off. The guy has no idea which baggage you have pre-purchased.

    • But they scan your boarding pass when dropping off? Big risk. $100 per leg if you need to pay at the airport!

  • So a simple cheap ski trip

Wait what!? is there such a thing as a 'cheap' ski trip?

    • Yep,but you need to be a Thaitarse master…

Get a previously cheap jetstar flight to Melbourne for $60. Guess now Tiger.

Buy a snowboard, clothing from interstate middle of summer. List on Gumtree in Melbourne for last day in snow.

Get a relocation from Jucy including 6 days lift passes for $1. Tank of fuel also included.

Book trip on last weekend/ off peak in a lodge for $40 a night. Including breakfast/ brunch wink wink.

Grab a huge lasagne to last a couple of dinners, salads, tuna, noodles, obviously a carton of beer on the way up.

Sell snowboard on mountain with a left over lift pass thrown in for a nice profit.

Drive home. All up was about $250 minus $125 profit from an easy sale.

  • Shittest airline gets shitier? Anyone surprised?

Probably to stop the abuse of the system in the past
    It's a budget airline
They have to either put more fees in or raise base prices for tickets

    Such is life
I know it sucks but face it, why should large items be allowed in for free when they can make a profit off it

84 dollars is still cheaper than driving
Buy cheap this is the result
They are allowed to recoup costs for your board taking up space
I don't agree it should form part of your checked luggage if you're paying 50 for your board to come but i don't make the rules

I don't understand why they don't let you take mountain bike, surfboard, skis and jetski free as cabin baggage! Bastards!!

    • Never was free, you just paid for it as normal luggage by weight. Now they double dip. Why should a 3kg board be charged more than a 20kg bag?
