Temporary Wi-Fi/Internet Solution

So we just move to a new place and it's taking too long to have our internet connection done and probs would take a week more to finish it as we having issues to the building wirings. I've already added some data to my phone but it only lasted for couple of days.

I'm thinking to get a pocket wifi or rechargable ones that can be purchased on local supermarkets so I can share it as well with my partner. My data add-on is costing me $50 for 10GB for couple of days. Any tips/ recommendations? Ta!

for modems, you could also just use a spare 4G android phone that you're not using and tether it via Wifi. Tethering uses a lot of power though so you'll need to keep the phone on charger while using (not to mention the phone will heat up).

    Yeliboy, who is your ISP?

I was reading about the new modem Telstra released this year with a built in 4G simcard.
The Telstra Gateway Frontier modem auto uses 4G when the fixed line is not available or down.

Telstra are charging a premium for this modem, however if you are contracting with Telstra it may be worth the extra cost to get you up and running now on 4G at fixed line broad band pricing?

    • its only a fallback 4G sim when the primary fttp / fttn connection isn't available
its not designed for a "full time" system

Sure you could try and get them to "activate" it until the connection is online but whats the bet they will charge you for the data

Thats if the OP is with Telstra to begin with

  • steal your neighbours wifi if you can

honestly, if its only 1 week I wouldnt bother with buying new devices like those pocket 4G modems. i'd just tether the data to share. 10GB is plenty of data for a few days unless you're constantly streaming.

  • I was in a similar situation when I was waiting for my NBN to be connected. I just bought a Telstra 3g thing for $10 & unlocked it. I then took advantage of any data sim deals and kept changing cards.

    • Where does one find this "Telstra 3g thing" for $10
      And
How does one unlock this "Telstra 3g thing?"

If you have a smartphone, tether to a computer via the USB cable. (Don't need the wifi pocket modem.) Dunno about the other but on android you plug the phone charging cable into the computer USB port, then go to settings, turn data on, then: more, mobile network sharing, USB connection, and select USB tethering.
