Do I Have a Ducted Rangehood

Hi,

I live in an apartment in Southbank, VIC (older than 15 years - not the new ones built in the last 10 years).

My rangehood has gone kaput and I'm looking for a new one. However, I'm not sure if I can go for a ducted version or need a re-circulating one. I've read that apartment dwellers are mostly restricted to just the re-circulating ones. However, looking up through the hole where the old rangehood used to be, I see a circular pipe going up and into the ceiling. I do not see any vents in the cupboard or at the top of the cupboard; so don't know where re-circulated rangehood would have vented the air back into the room.

The previous rangehood that I had was a Westinghouse WRH608IS, which is listed in the choice rangehood test from Feb '16 in both the ducted and re-circulating sections and I don't know how it was installed and in which mode.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers.

  • Most rangehoods just have a plate in the back and top which is removed to make them ducted instead of recirculating.

Take the old one out and have a look, its like a 2 second job.
If you can't manage that, just go ahead and send back your man card.

    • Thats part of the problem. The old one is gone. My wife got someone in to take it out and give us a quote for a new one - which was way too crazy and I thought I'll just do it myself.

So it there a hole in the wall or ceiling?
They're usually a rectangle or round

Odds are it is recirculating, or you can get a recirculating one and it'll be fine.

        • Round pipe about 15cm diameter going all the way to the ceiling and beyond. All of this behind the cupboards.

          @MrHyde:
So you need a rangehood with a 150mm outlet, it's ducted.

        • @Drew22:

Thank you. Good point on the outlet - I had completely forgotten about that and the one I was looking at purchasing has a rectangular outlet and I would have needed an adaptor.

I might be better off just getting the same model as before. It lasted for 6 years and it is still rated ok by choice.

No idea if they are good or not but Aldi have a couple of sale this week
