WW3 - what has fallout taught you

So with media articles begenning to use the phrase WW3, however unlikely, and even more so Australia being affected, being completely hypothetical, if we were to suddenly be in a fallout like scenario (notice the word like, which means similar, but not exact) how has the game potentially given you an advantage over other civilians.

eg: stock up on some random item as currency - coke bottle caps

If I ever go on a journey to find my lost child after seeing my wife die right in front of me, I can screw almost every girls and guys that choose to travel with me.

  • Never listen to a man in a cowboy hat! I'm looking at you Bob Katter!

  • I will have sex with women and then turn them into devastating robo killers. Also men.

  • Is it true than in the event of a nuclear blast, you hold your thumb out in front of you and if you cant see the mushroom cloud behind your thumb you are relatively safe, if you can see it then you are in danger of the fallout/blast shockwave etc? Apparently that's the reason why the guy on the cover has his thumb up. Fun fact if true :)

Using similar triangles, if we assume that the mushroom cloud is 120 meter tall (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushroom_cloud) and average thumb height of 7cm holding out at an arm length of 50cm. If we matched the size of thumb to the height of the cloud, the maths would be approximated to 120/(0.07/0.5). The distance would be about 860 meters.

Now according to Quora (https://www.quora.com/How-far-from-the-centre-of-the-explosi…), you need to be about 5 miles from the blast to be safe. So, I don't think the 'rule of thumb' works in this case. Correct me if my maths is wrong :)

Personally I'm looking forward to setting up my own radio station and bore the crap out of everyone with my inane chatter and play the same 10 songs about nuclear war on repeat.

    Check out http://aussurvivalist.com/
They are still backing economic collapse ahead of war.
Note they tend to have some pretty 'out there' political views with a strong free speech view, so some of the comments are pretty offensive/inflammatory.
I disagree with their solutions - in almost any scenario you will be better as part of a community with strong ties rather than an individual attempting self reliance - but I respect them for at least considering there are risks that can be prepared for instead of assuming nothing bad will ever happen.
Note I would assume your IP address goes on a list if you visit ;-)

  • war never changes

    also start collecting bottle caps.

  • would you bunker down and protect your property, or go the wanderer route? if wanderer, solo, or companion. cat, dog, fish if your real keen

Eneloop will be the new currency?

  • Fallout 4 taught me that you can't rely on RPG elements to survive because you never know when they'll dumb the system down for the new core demographic.

CataclysmDDA Roguelike, however, taught me to collect coats and flashlights. Random pharmacueticals and cans of food are the new necessities, and if you didn't have a trade before the apocalypse you better start learning how to use a saw and hammer! Don't try to settle in a city; if possible find a nice secluded house and use a bike to get into cities/towns at night and grab as much as you can, work on fortifications and try to grow some edible food during the day. Collect water and matches before the water and power turns off. And oh my god close the damn curtains for christ sake.

I prefer my apocalypse survival games to actually be at least somewhat about survival in a post-apocalypse scenario and not some hyper-fantasy one… Even thought Cataclysm has… laserguns and super-sized wasps, but hey, you never know.

I'm not going to make it..xx

  • If you want some survivalist game fun check out This war of mine: the little ones.

Basically have to sneak around and try to get supplies whilst not starving or freezing to death which is not totally realistic but considered too bleak to play by some so it's going down the right path.

Australia is a valued asset for both China and the US so would we just be wiped out tritium style whilst everyone rushes for farmland and secure assets? I don't know.

About as well prepared as most of us can get is buying a few water filters and some canned food and try not to get shot in the meantime so if worst comes to worst most of us are rooted.

  • I don't know, I reckon if you have a lots of vege seeds, some fruit trees, few chickens, a dam and a big gate you might kick on for a while,
before some feral mutant teenagers eat you

    • you mean apex gang?

      • Maybe you could have a pet Guard pig that could eat the trespassers
Apex or not, their nun too fussy

  • just thought of one major difference between this scenario happening in AU vs USA: guns. they have readily accessible guns over there, whereas over here, it would be a much harder challenge to acquire weapons and ammo. unless you make your own crossbow thing.

    • That's why the use of a traditional bow will also come in handy; you can fashion your own if you can't find a particularly good one.

In a realistic apocalypse scenario, your first stop should be the sports store to stock up on weapons; bats and helmets are a good call. It's also not a terrible idea to get a few bowling balls if you're using a safehouse that's on a second story or up a ladder…. That's only if they're out of bowwws at the sport store lol.

Or you could go to a hardware store! You could get all sorts of useful things, namely an axe as one of the more useful ones. Chainsaws are a luxurious but impractical weapon as they require fuel and maintenance! Crowbars and big hammers should be your go to, especially if they're out of axes…. I promise I haven't thought about this a lot lol.

      • And hit up Myer's kitchenware department for knives and cleavers!
