Best Setup for Movie HTPC (but The Catch Is, Will Be Downloading Remotely)

Hi

So I was living abroad for the last 5 months, and in the 5 months the HTPC i had setup for my parents went wrong and it was too hard to fix remotely.
I have told them if they want a proper setup they can pay for it, but i was thinking some sort of NAS system where i can remotely add torrents into a queue where the files automatically download, unzip, then catalogues itself.

So far they know how to use PLEX, and im sure there are many options, but i am looking for any specific advise on what hardware to buy and how i would go about remotely adding movies and tv shows for them. Something not too complicated, a NAS with plex ive heard does well but not sure about remote activity.

I would prefer something with data redundancy as well, because i myself like to archive all the moves/tv shows. But i think over my lifetime ive lost two massive lots of TV shows and movies due to not having a proper backup.

And and all advise would be greatly appreciated!

So you want advice on how to pirate tv shows remotely.

  • Tell the oldies to just NetflixNChill

  • What you're looking for is something that can run couch potato and sonar as well as plex and a torrent client (rtorrent, etc), You will probably be looking at around $1k for a NAS with the guts to do all of this (plus the hard disks).

You can also have it set up as a VPN so you can remote into it.

Have fun with the integration, but play your cards right, and it can be almost totally automated. It will also probably attract the attention of the MPAA.

RAID is not backup. If your parents don't know how to check the disks and replace them when necessary, you will lose the collection again.

  • I do this with a HP Microserver N54L. Just upgrade the video card if using as a HTPC and install TeamViewer for remoting into it. Run Windows on it and install your torrent client and Plex server. Can also go the Couch Potato/SazNZ, etc if you want to troll the newsgroups for content.

  • yeah i would just get them a netflix subscription…

  • What you can do for automation:

Movies - use a indexer that watches an IMDB watchlist and then as there are movies you wish to get just add them to your personal watchlist. Your indexer will then get the movies for you.

TV Programs - use Sonar to automate the grabbing of programs as they become available.

To catalog your files, have sonar watch a particular folder for TV program which it will then rename and move accordingly. For Movies use Couchpotato or Filebot to watch a folder for renaming and moving.

For remote access for your torrents and files, I would just RDP into your home network as required rather than opening up ports for remote access of programs.
