Samsung Galaxy S8 or iPhone 8 (when released) - Phone + Watch + VR Ecosystem

I am a iphone user and due for a phone upgrade now. I considering whether I should continue with iphone (8 when released) or Galaxy S8. This time I want to consider the combination of Smartphone + VR capabilities + Smartwatch. From what I heard

  • Smartphone - Likely to be similar
  • Smartwatch - Apple watch has the lead.
  • VR - Galaxy is ahead

What should I get. Thanks in advance.

    • Thanks Intresting

  • Pixel if you want to experience Android in its purest form without all the tacked-on bloat, and the quickest OS updates (most manufacturers can only promise about 18 months of updates).

    • Updates are not that important anymore. 90% of users won't notice any difference. Moreover, most geeks update their phones every two years anyway. The only benefit is that the stock android is cleaner and theoretically faster.

      • And here's the the reason Android has more malicious software than any other OS.

Bloat isn't much of a problem IMO, you can disable majority of them in the system and with the storage spaces on phones nowadays. the space the bloat takes up is insignificant.

  • Honestly can't go wrong with both choices, But ill say Sammy

  • Hey I was in the same boat as you my friend, I dont believe you can lose with whatever you pick in 2017. We are getting a new Pixel 2, iphone 7s, iphone 8 and SGS8. I live in the Apple Ecosystem with the cloud service syncing my ipod Touch, iphone, ipad and MacBook Pro. I have however chosen to go the S8 route. Its a pretty sexy unit and with the rumoured american pricing for the iPhone 8 at $1000USD, its pretty scary to see what the iP8 will cost here. Hoping the advances also carry through to the above average Samsung Gear S3, i've also purchased that yesterday.

  • I'd go with Samsung or even Pixel if you want VR. They both have a VR platform that's available now, whereas Apple haven't made something like that, yet at least. Even if Apple releases a VR platform, I feel that it'd take time before it takes off. Just my 2c.

Smartwatch… I don't know what you want with smartwatches. I think Gear S3 is awesome for what I use it for. Tracking my daily activity, notifications and basic replies while looking like a watch (and I charge it twice or sometimes three times every week, depending on my usage pattern). Apps on Tizen OS are lacking though, definitely lacking. WatchOS and Android Wear has advantages there.

I think it'd all boil down to preferences, really.

You're asking between a phone that has been announced and to be released very shortly, vs a phone we don't know anything about, let alone whether it will have VR capabilities or not.

VR on a phone is something you think is cool for about an hour and then wearing an uncomfortable pancake on your face that gives you motion sickness gets old. I wouldn't choose a device because it can be used as a VR screen.

You may also want to consider that Android is an OS designed by the world largest internet advertising business for the sole purpose of collecting every single piece of data it can about the user and then using that to serve unwanted advertising to them.

Say what you like about Apple but unlike Google they do not make almost all of their money from advertising and therefore have no incentive to want to spy on you.

    • I agree with this. I don't think you should get a phone based on its VR capabilities. Even if Apple launches a VR headset, I don't think the experience will be much different from Pixel or Galaxy.

Jeeves it seems like you're a fan of the Apple Watch, so go for the iPhone. You'll put the VR headset down after an hour but you'll enjoy the smartwatch experience daily.

  • I was on Samsung for years, switched to Iphone 6 in 2015 because all my Android phones end up lagging (S4 lasted 5 months before severe lag - factory reflashed made no difference) . Iphone 6 still going strong, slight lag. However I made the jump to S8+ because I still havent figured out Itunes after all this time, wasting my 128gb!

  • Thanks everyone. I agree VR normally would be used infrequently but I work in the Digital Learning space so need it for work. Looks like it is going to be Samsung G8 but I will wait till I get details of iphone 8.
