Spending money consecutively over 4 weeks to receive discounts at Woolies and Coles - Do Opal card top ups count?

I get these sorts of emails all the time where if you spend $XX amount for four consecutive weeks you receive $XX amount off your next shop.

The terms and conditions don't mention anything about excluding opal top ups so I'm wondering if it's allowed and if anyone has topped up their opal cards for 4 consecutive weeks to receive the discount?

    Want to know this as well

  • I'm thinking they count if it is not mentioned…

    $50 transaction and $50 discount excludes purchases of all gift cards, iTunes cards, tobacco and tobacco related products. $50 discount will be loaded to your flybuys card after your week 4 qualifying spend. Standard flybuys terms and conditions apply and are available at flybuys.com.au.

    If you are a PrePaid phone user, phone credit works towards the spend at Coles.

    BTW Bettina, you've got enough points for $110 worth of free purchases already LOL. Your email address is also showing in the link.

      Whoops lol

    I would be careful linking to that marketing email directly.

    It allows anyone to login to your account and they can mess around with your account, even cancel your flybuys…

    They won't be able to redeem flybuys points; well, they can but they don't have the card but if they wanted to they could set a random pin.

    Better to repost as a pdf.

  • Either way, I would think it wouldn't work because of the way the rewards system is setup.

    I know Opal topup is not counted at Woolworths even though it is not technically a Travel Card sale.

    I try to never chase "rewards" or "loyalty points" since their intended aim is to cause people to spend money they would not have otherwise.

      No doubt it's a game we all play.

      Your choice to leave the game means you will never lose, but it also means you will never win. A smart ozbargainer can play inside their rules, thus maximising their finances. Coles are banking on the dumb customers to get caught up, and their existence allows customers like myself to benefit.

      For example, my offer is spend 4 x $50 and receive $50 credit. If Opal recharges work then that's 20% off my train travel.

    • maybe you are single but a family with 2 kids, $50 a week grocery is nothing.
      so, this promo doesnt change anything. if possible always buy 1/2 price items from Coles each week total $50 for 4 weeks and get $XX

    Slightly off topic, but we've noticed Coles have been upping the amount we have to spend and decreasing the amount off gradually.

    Has anyone else experienced this "creepage?".

    Eg it was something like $50 for $50, then $75 for $50, $100 for $50, $100 for $25 etc

      Yes, but if you don't activate 1 or 2 offers they reduce the next target.

      Yeah, I've started playing woolies and coles against each other.. If you just shop at coles all the time their offers decrease in value… shop at woolies for a few weeks until their offers start going downhill and by then coles should be trying to get you back with better offers ;)

    • Another option is to setup multiple flybuys accounts and rotate between them. If you don't use one of the accounts for a while then it undergoes reverse-creepage :)

        I do that also with Woolies.

        Sometimes I have a shop for 4 weeks for $50 and get $50 from both Coles and woolies.
        So I do shopping on Monday and Thursday and then try to only get the specials that I use and keep it at just over $50,

        • ^^ Another player that wins here folks :)

  • Nope, neither. I only get spend towards the fuel voucher. Woolies made that mistake once when they switched to the current point system and I claimed points on it. The next week they had plugged the hole.

    Nope, it doesn't work on opal topup. I've tried that before.

    • Lame…

      • It used to work under the old rewards system, but with the new Everyday Rewards system any Opal recharges are now excluded.

          I know it doesn't work for woolies, but coles doesn't say 'travel card' is excluded in its T&Cs..

          @tajid:

          I have yet to find Coles that does Opal top-ups.

          @scrypton: Same here.

          @scrypton:

          Broadway and Wynyard do. I don;t know where else. I do get flybuys points from the top up though ( unlike woolies)
